At the bottom of the streaming page, there's a choice to select VLC or WMP, and the same checkbox as before for if you want to spawn an external app instead of the embedded player.
So now, for instance, you can choose WMP and the embedded player will now be a WMP-driven page. Or, choose WMP and choose the external app, and WMP will launch and play the stream.
I haven't tested WMP much, but I think it should work. (both for Firefox and MSIE). Also remember, you must use an ASF mux and the WMV2 and MP3 codecs to get a WMP-compatible stream. If you try to use WMP with mp4 video, don't be surprised if you get no video
