I've decided to ditch my WinTV PVR USB2 in favor of a dedicated IR receiver but frankly, I have no idea what to get. Could you guys suggest some alternatives?

You want an ir receiver instead of a capture card?
USB-UIRT works great.
I'm not always right

MCE receiver/remote works well and is cheap. Used with HIP or Girder it's very flexable flexable.
GBPVR Server:
AMD Sempron 3300+, 1gb DDR, 100, 200 & 500gb HDDs, DVD -/+RW PVR150 RETAIL, PVR150MCE. GBPVR 1.0.16, SKIN'S = Default Blue, PLUGIN'S = None MediaMVP

Couple that with the fickle IR receiver and you have yourself a PITA that I'm just tired of fighting with (when it doesn't work). Now that it seems Hauppauge has ironed out the 150 timecode bugs I think it is safe to replace this unit. I can buy one of those LP 150s from PCAlchemy and a stand alone IR device with the money I get for selling the PVR USB2. Not a bad tradeoff IMO. Plus, I'll have a box that doesn't need to be super tweaked when built and rebuilt.

Ok, I think I have opted to pick up the IR Blaster (a.k.a. USB-UIRT) but I have a question, do I really need the optional 56kHz receiver or will the standard one work fine. I couldn't really figure out what the optional receiver would be good for.

It can still transmit 56 Khz without the receiver. What I don't understand is if it can learn 56Khz codes to send without a 56 Khz receiver though. I got the 56Khz version =)

I suppose being safe is better than being sorry, especially since the added feature is only an additional $5. I'd just like to know what it would be used for...
