Help - House Networking

Just got the gbPVR setup with the Hauppage 150. Great product - very excited. Anyway here is my situation.

I would like to have one machine do all the recording and be able to playback to multiple units through the house. What is the best way to do this?

I haven't even bought a video card yet until I can figure out a way to accomplish this task. I am not looking for a free or even cheap solution necessarily -- so if anyone can let me know my options I would be appreciative.

I have a wireless network, but live in a ranch style house so running wires/cable would not be that bad either. Preferably, I would like the computer to be located downstairs, to reduce noise.

Alternativly, you can get the web streaming plugin working if you're a little savy, and use the web page on the lan as if you were outside the house.

I suppose you can also install GB on other computers, share the recording folder on the main machine, and then point the videos plugin to that share to watch over the network.

The MVP's are probably the most WIFE 1.0 compatible product. I've never tried WIFE 2.0 so can't comment if it would be less or more compatible.

The MVPs are by far the easiest and probably cheapest solution. They integrate great with gbpvr, are only slightly larger than a paperback book and include a remote. I bought 3 and put two in kid bedrooms and 1 on a landing, all sharing the same server that runs in our living room.

However, whatever you do you should strongly consider running cable. You can stream video to an MVP wirelessly (I've done it) but when you consider the bandwidth it takes, the stars have to align perfectly to do this on 54g. Better get rid of your 2.4 GHz cordless phones, and buy replacements for your neighbors' phones too. The MVP is very unforgiving of network hiccups. Also, I truly doubt you could get two or more MVPs streaming high bitrate video wirelessly. A wireless network is great for sharing the net... not so great for sharing high bitrate video.

If you live in the US and are really lucky, you may be near a Radio Shack that hasn't been pillaged of their MVPs yet. Radio Shack has been selling them on clearance for $39.95 for a while now though, so odds are they're probably already gone, maybe even gobbled up by someone in these forums.

I started with a DSM-320 by D-link, then got into GBPVR. You can try looking at UPnP A/V media players like the DSM-320. Some of them are getting quite cheap. Many of them still have issues, so you need to research and know what you are getting and why.

If you wire the network, I like capone's suggestion, There is no extra hardware to buy, Just give Sub a little extra and watch your recordings on any computer on the network.
