There is a fan on my motherboard (right next to the CPU, smaller fan - I think a north bridge or southbridge fan - something like that) and it all of a sudden developed a certain noise. Fairly destracting.

Would it be safe to stop this fan, like stick something in it to stop it or is there a better way? haha

I plan to hide the PC anyway, but I'm pretty sure you would still be able to hear it.

Thanks

there should be a wire from the fan to a 3 pin connector on the mobo. Just unplug it and watch the temp with motherboard monitor or similar program so it doesnt get too hot.

I would purchase a 3rd party northbridge heatsink something like http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/i...b124d516e8

yes, these small fans can be very noisy as they spin so fast.

You should also perhaps consider a fanless replacement such as the zalman ZM-NB47J. I run one on my Abit NF7-S with the FSB running at 217.

I would only add - the mobo manufacturer wouldn't have spent their 50cents on that fan if the component under it didn't need it. I'd replace it, or go with a heat sinc as suggested above, but wouldn't just stop/remove it.

Concerning case noise, even though it didn't really fit (I glued it in!) I put a large 120mm fan in my case that I salvaged from a old workstation chass machine. The fan moves a ton or air as is turns slowely and quitely. generally bigger fans are going to be quieter - and work better at the same time.

I had a system blue screen on me a couple of times in a row.
It turned out the chipset fan had stopped working.
Just my 2 cents.
