I have a tivo which i had for 2 years before i got my pvr

My question is how many people have a tivo (or something similar) and which do you use more (Tivo v gbpvr)

Tivo never really seemed to take off in the UK as far as I can tell. Well at least not in my area - sometimes this sort of thing is marketed mare heavily in different regions. I only know one person who has/had it.

I think Sky+ has probably taken over the market here but I want as little to do with Sky as possible so I won't be getting one. Besides - I have 3 analogue and 4 DVB-T tuners in my GB-PVR setup - I can record more than I have time to watch. Big Grin

Tivo just arrived in (my part of) Canada last week, and the price is exhorbitant extortion, so nobody I know will be signing up soon. Big Grin

When i was in USA 2 years ago, I discover TIVO and replayTV boxes, I was nearly ready to bring one of those in France but due to compatibilty issues, I only came home with a goal : build my own PVR. I must say that my GBPVR setup is much better...

I do my best to talk people out of Tivo - needs to be hacked to copy recordings off the box, monthly fees, tracks your watching habits, no way to get EPG updates after "end-of-life"...

Most people stop me at that point and ask me how to build a PVR like mine Big Grin

My Tivo is 6 years old and still kicking. It shares duties with GBPVR. The $200 lifetime membership was worth it when you consider the reliability. It's not as flexible as todays DVR's but "it just works" and my parents know how to use it which is more than I can say about their VCR.

I've had the HD Tivo (HR10-250) for more than a year. I use it daily. My goal is to find a computer solution that is similar. GBPVR is close, but I just find too many things that would keep me from switching. Controlling even one HD ATSC stream just seems hard! Hats off to Sub for even getting this far Smile.

It looks like GBPVR is excellent for SD broadcasts. Once you get the HD bug, however, you can't go back. And, once they shut off analog in the states, you won't be able to go back!

I just don't believe in paying for something that should be free. I refuse to pay a monthly (or lifetime) subscription fee for the privledge of recording a form of entertainment that, without John P. Consumer, wouldn't even exist. The hardware costs money and I'll gladly pay for it but beyond that, hell no.

I'm really not looking forward to this. None of the PVR card manufacturers have managed to release a decent SD/HDTV card that functions with Digital Cable. QAM will be the death of the PVR scene here in the states, I just know it. I think I'll walk over to capitol hill and thank my "brilliant" congressmen and women right now... Buncha corporate puppets they are...
