Hmm it didn't turn off. Didn't touch rc/kybd/mse. What would stop it going into hibernation? The screensaver?

Almost anything. Hard disk activity. Do you have any remote desktop server running on the machine?
I'm not always right

Yes I have RealVNC running as a service. Would this effect it? Think i will disable it and try again.

Standby works for me fine with RealVNC running but I would suggest disabling everything you can and building up from there. Problem is usually something using too much CPU or you have left a video app running. I assume you can force a standby with the shutdown option in XP OK?

also, if youve set things like defrag to run when the PC is idle (a lot of antivirus stuff does this too) it may well kick in and start doing stuff before the pc can go into standby... sorta same as what b00sfuks saying but sometimes the options are not entirly obvious

If you have comskip set to run after a recording, possibly thats keeping the PC awake?

I have VNC (tightVNC, but still) running on my machine. *sometimes* (not often, but sometimes) the machine refuses to go to sleep. If I connect to my VNC server and then disconnect, then - tada - 15 minutes later the machine goes to sleep. Don't know why.

Done a cold boot, left VNC running and GBPVR on screen but nothing else and guess what: my little baby just went to sleep :p

Thanks for all your replies.
