Not sure if support is the right place to post this but heck...

ATI have launched a new transcoder. The product is designed to use the graphics card hardware from their upcoming Xxxxx graphics cards to improve encoding rates.

ATI have released the product that will run in software mode only on certain ATI cards. However, some clever bunny has released a version that works with any (most?) graphics cards.

see here for details

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/12/20/...r_for_all/

It is ridiculously fast. I transcoded a 900MB mpg to divx in 13mins. Using mencoder, this normally takes 90mins minimum. Not too sure about quality tho and you have no control over resolution, bitrates etc but a simple low --> high slider. This improves video bit rates but doesn;t change the resolution.

it includes a number of different encoders including H.264, PSP etc

I would recommend that you take a look. If you are looking for low bitrate files and value speed over quality, this could be a nice little christmas present for you.

have a great christmas and new year everyone.

I just need my gb-pvr box to remain stable over the recording-intensive xmas period!

Damn your right it was quick 16 mins to convert a 1 hr mpeg2 to divx4 file, before that would have taken 45-60mins.

fast eh!!

I am just testing with the H.264 and wmv (humph) encoder to compare the output quality. I am not sure that the DivX encoder is good enough for some of the programs that I want to encode (and keep). I think it is good enough for day-to-day stuff though.

Did I mention how fast it was?

I spoke a little too soon I left an encoding going and I went to bed and woke up this morning and it only took 7 hours to do 40% of a 2 hour film.maybe it was just a hiccup, so 'll try again.

tried the Avivo converter and it wouldn't work for me, had to search the forums to find this alternate batch file that DID work, seems the original one is hardcoded for the paths but this one should work for everyone...

****************************************
@echo off

cls

xcopy /V /Y wb*.* "%WINDIR%\system32"
xcopy /V /Y a*.* "%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\ATI Technologies"
xcopy /E /Y ATI.ACE "%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\"

regsvr32 /s "%WINDIR%\system32\wbocx.ocx"
regsvr32 /s "%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\ATI Technologies\atidvcr.dll"
regsvr32 /s "%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\ATI Technologies\atixcode.dll"

echo Done.
Pause

******************************
i still get better quality and adjustability from mencoder, but it is convenient and does a pretty good job overall..
Hope that helps some of you trying to get this to work.. Big Grin

The converter is fast, but it has several problems that I've encountered.

When you crank up the quality, the file size is huge. I used it's default quality setting for converting to divx (about 75% of the slider) and a 2 1/2 segment was over 4 gig. As someone pointed out, you can't manually specify the resolution either, so unless you're converting to a format that requires a reduced resolution like the PSP format, you'll have to live with resolution of your original MPG.

Also, I tried this on a 3 hr 14m recording, over 8 gig in size. It ran in less than an hour (impressive), but stopped conversion without error after about 2 1/2 hours of video. Also, it broke the file in two pieces, apparently limited to 4gig for an output file. One file was 4 gb and the remaining portion of the video was in the next file, filename numerically incremented.

I think the PSP or H.264 conversion options might be nice since it scales down the resolution, but otherwise it doesn't seem very pratical, despite being blazing fast.

FYI for others.

The Avivo program wouldn't work for me until I installed the .NET SDK. There were missing dll's that were preventing the atixcode.dll from registering with regsvr32.

letter boxed xvid & divx files converted with this do not work so well on the MVP. The movie starts at the top of the screen & leaves a monster black bar at the bottom.

all those settings you wanted to tweak are now available!
i found that the encoder properties were available when clicking on properties of the encoder in a graphedit graph Smile
so if you wanted to set any settings you wanted, you just need build a graph in graphedit [or connect to remote graph as you run avivo to get started]
then right click video encoder and do properties, set everything the way you want it and run the graph...i'll build a graph later and upload to illustrate..
i've used it to unlock the un-changable settings in this encoder and it rocks!
i'm even using it to capture straight to mpeg2 with software recorder plugin Smile
and as far as i know it doesn't change the resolution of the files unless you want it to! [which kinda sucked about the UI]
oh and you have to use the non-mce encoders in the graph [they install both]
it really is blazing speed...
Enjoy
[more to come]

very cool. i built a graph manually, but couldn't connect to a remote graph wth graphedit while the avivo converter was running. any insight?
