I know some people don't like these 'generic' questions but will ask it anyway! I have 512mb ram at the moment in my htpc, would an extra 512mb be a worthwhile investment?

i would say yes,
i went from 256 to 1280 and well the difference was huge, with a program like gbpvr that can use a lot of ram the more ram you have the better. it also means you can run more crap in the background (comskip etc).

There is a combo of facotrs at work: processing power and ram. For the processor you have, it would be worth it, because you have the power to take on a lot of extra tasks.
For someone w/ a weaker system, 512 would be fine, since it wouldn't be taking on enough extra work to use the extra ram. I have a 1.8Ghz system, and never get beyond the 768Mb or ram I have to get into virtual mem.

Ok thanks for the replies, seeing as ram pretty cheap these days will go out and buy some tomorrow

Yes seeing other peoples specs it does seem bit overkill for htpc! Trouble is I want it to be stable and I know if I start installing games, apps etc on it I'll end up having to reinstall Windows every couple of months!

I upgraded from 256MB to 1G before installing GBPVR. Running multiple apps are a lot quicker now and I'm sure GBPVR is faster than it would've been. Before you buy, check with Circuit City. Last week Circuit City was having a great deal on memory after rebates. I bought two 512MB for $24.99 each after rebates.
