Hello there,

I have been a Knoppmyth user for a while now. My setup is as follows:

2.4 Celeron (Dell built)
512 ram
80gb hd / 61gb hd / 80 gb usb hd
Nvidia MX4000
Aver DVB-t 771
Nova-T

I am based in the Uk, and have been getting my epg from the Radiotimes xml feed.

The problem is that the system, although it (mostly) works, is not that quick. changing a channel takes a while, and watching one channel whilst recording another results in extremely choppy live viewing. Both cards are set to hardware encoding, so they should be able to move along at a decent pace.

So, I am looking at GB-PVR. First off, will the hardware work? Secondly, will it move along at a decent pace? I am quite happy to use this box as a dedicated machine.

Thanks in advance - All comments much appreciated Smile

I believe that the Aver DVBT 771 does not use BDA drivers (maybe someone can confirm this) In which case it will not work with GBPVR. The Nova T works perfectly though.

GBPVR also handles multiple tuners better than anything else out there. You should have no trouble recording and watching at the same time. In terms of speed it depends what you mean by fast. For me, live preview mode channel changes are about 1-2 seconds and around 5 secs in timeshift mode. I don't think it's possible to do too much better than this given how badly windows deals with these things.

Specifically which Nova-T?

There are several, for example, I have a Nova-T USB, the original USB 1.1 version and that does not have BDA drivers. My Nova-T PCI (909) does have BDA support.

The dvb-t 771 does not have bda drivers and will not have bda drivers by all accounts so no it will not work with gbpvr. There is a hack to get it working with mediaportal but I believe it doesn't work that well. 1-2 sec delay on channel switching is standard for dvb-t cards on pcs, the only one I know that is quick is the nebula with their own software takes less than a second.

It must have BDA support so I believe that's all the Nova T's except the 1.1 USB version. I've previously used a 909 and USB2 Nova T with GBPVR and they work fine.

Some cards can change channels faster than others. On a hardware level the Nova-t USB2 seems to be able to tune almost instantly, whereas the Nova-t PCI takes about half a second. But then there are delays from the software on top of that (buffering, finding the right streams etc.).

Thanks for all the replies Smile

I have no idea which version of the Nova-T card I have. It is certainly PCI, but I dont know the chip set. Sad to hear that the Aver is a no no Sad

Although, if the Nova can handles multiple tuners at the same time then why would I need two capture cards?! Smile

I have not managed to get the card to do two things at once in Linux yet, if it can be done with GB-PVR then wow.

The times listed for channel changing in live tv of about 1-2 seconds i consistent with my linux setup. However, I think it is a bit quicker than 5 seconds in time shift mode.

Can't comment on the cards...

I tried Knoppmyth before GBPVR and could never get it to work quite how I wanted - Installed GBPVR and it was great out of the box (or .msi as the case may be...), and I haven't looked back since - the support (through these boards) is also second to none...

The only comment I would make would be to increase your RAM to 1GB, although I have run GBPVR (without any problems) on 256...

You've got the wrong end of the stick. GB-PVR can handle multiple Nova-T cards (each has only one tuner)....if you wanted to record two channels, you need two cards.
