Noticed something I didn't expect the other day.

I use a FX5200 TV out to my 68cm PAL CRT TV. Resolution is set at 640x480

When I look at windows is is pretty ordinary - flicker, poor definition etc.

When I watch TV or recoded video through GBPVR the clarity is just brilliant. (VRM7 - SD digital capture - deinterlacing set to 'none')

But when I pause I don't see any flicker or tearing or frame jumping even on horiziontal lines. So does this mean that I watching a progressive image or an interlaced one ?

DTB Digital SD + HD content (PAL-MPEG2-AC3).
Custom case made very quiet. Zalman CPU cooler.
Sits in rack with other HiFi.

ParaLED to show tuner activity.

For one, monitors are much higher res, so it will always show every inprerfection very clearly.

Yeah, what I guess I am trying to understand is - are TVs interlaced inherently - or is just that the broadcast signal is?

Well, all Standard Definition monitors are 480i, or 480 horizaontal lines of interlaced resolution, so if your TV is not HD or ED, it is an interlaced set. Your FX5200 probably detects this and automatically outputs in an interlaced format to be displayed on your interlaced monitor. So basically, when watching interlaced video on an interlaced display, you wouldnt see any tearing or anything, because the display is meant to show interlaced video.

so yes, non-HD TV's are inherently interlaced

So when I pause I don't see ficker because I am only looking at either the top or bottom field (half frame)?

When you pause, Your graphics card is still rendering that image in an interlaced mode to be outputted to your TV, and your interlaced TV is still displaying the rendered output at a normal frame rate, regardless of what GBPVR is doing, paused or not.

Ok I follow now.

Just suprises me that the TV can show 720x576 video so well and 640x480 windows so badly.

I suppose it mainly comes down to static image vs moving image.

Taking a photo of TV dosen't work very well. Scan line is evedent as well as individual pixels.

It acually looks much better than these would suggest
