A friend of mine is the developer of this cool product: it's a light system (LED based) that can produce any RGB combination.
It connects to a USB and runs a tiny app that controls it.
The lights are then aimed to a back wall (behind or around the display).
In addition for the user to be able to control the light color, or atmosphere, the app can control them for you based on the image being displayed!
So it can "react" to the movie, TV or game, and "enhance" the image displayed to the wall around the TV/Monitor.

I have one system running at home. Although it does require some tweaking here and there (he's working on a more accurate color control, I guess whoever buys it will get free updates), but overall, you can get to a very cool effect:[Image: ARE_BLUE_LT.jpg]

Take a look at this link for prices and some more pictures (scroll down to the bottom):

There are several options available to purchase (a much cheaper DIY version, were there's some self-assembly involved).

I guess if there is interest within this community, we can arrange a group discount.

I have already got this guy interested in writing a GBPVR plugin to control this app (it comes with its own API, so you can do whatever you like with it), so one does not need to leave GBPVR to control it (bring it on, off, or control its main features).

Please tell me what you think of it.

Well, yes, nice, but what if you have a TV/Plasma/Projector(!!) already?
This gadget let's you enjoy the same idea (the fact that Philips does the same only enforces this trend), with any display that you already have.

And the price is a "tiny-bit" different...

Not to mention having API that you can control and play with too.

I'm not knocking the device at all, but I wasn't impressed by the phillips ambilight idea.
It just doesn't do it for me.

Sorry.

Does this device do the video analysis?
To keep the video and the light matched?

If you mean whether it analyzes the display? yes. It can (you have control over the GUI or API) analyze different area of the screen to "decide" on the output color. There are preset for "Movie", "Game", etc.
You can control the rate at which it does so, so you get better resopnse (theoretically giving up CPU, however I saw very little CPU usage with it).

It can come as a set of two light-bars or one. In the case of two, you can also control it to have differnt lights on each side, or "mono" - have the same color on both sides.
