I'm new to gbpvr forums and I've found it to be an awesome resource.

I'd trying to find appropraite hardware to set up a media server in my home without having a pc in every location around the home for recording and playback of TV etc signals.

The only/best hardware that I can seem to find for the thin client part of the setup (in the lounge room) is the Hauppauge MediaMVP device.

I would really like to be able to do away with my DVD player and convert to one device to handle playback and recording but I can't find a thin client device that can support 5.1 sound that works the same way that the MediaMVP supports 2 channel stereo sound.

This seems to be the only thing missing for me to jump in boots and all!!

Has anyone any suggestions about how to get 5.1 to the lounge from the server without having a PC in the lounge room (wife won't go for PC's all round the house...)

Thanks

Isn't there a version of the MVP that has a Toslink or Digital Coax out?? Not sure about the software side but thats probably a good start.

Failing that you'll need to look into running GBPVR as client server. THere are a few threads around detailling how, and for recordings/videos it should work fine.

I read somewhere that there are some hardware mods that may enable this - check out this (http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=4267.0).

Actually, through different models and hardware modicfication, you can connect the medimvp via digital (optical or spdif). But you CANNOT use 5.1 in anyway on the MVP.

In other words the best you can dio is really really clear two channel audio

that's a real pity cause the MVP could be the be all and end all but the 5.1 is all that I can see it is missing.....

I have sent an email to sales@hauppauge and the reply was that 5.1 is not on the immediate things to do list, but maybe next year.

In the meantime, keep converting my DVD Library to server and wait.

PS - intersting link regarding the spdif output connector thingy, I'll keep it in mind....

thanks guys for the replies, much appreciated.

MVPMC is I beleive a firmware project that replaces the hauppauge firmware. This supports at least AC3 on the MVP. I believe it can be used as a frontend for myth. Will not work with GB though. But the possibility is there.

The stereo output of a ripped DVD played through the MVP will decode to Dolby ProLogic to give pretty good surround sound with a surround sound Amp.

Not the full banana (AC3/ DTS 5.1) I agree, but the next best thing and works well for me.

Roll on a HighDef AC3 GBPVR compatible MVP substitute Cool

I dont know about the AC3 aspect of it, but one of the mvpmc authors recently added GB-PVR support to their dongle.
