No I don't want it but rather less of it...

To post you have to sign up, during the sign up process you have to do the image verification thing and presumably activate your account from the email you receive confirming your registration

Now I guess if the spammers could be arsed they could write a bot that can check for the email (or at least predict the activation link), what I don't get is how the sneaky buggers are getting past the image stuff?

So, any ideas on how this is being done, or even better ways to stop them doing it without making the sign up process so long winded that newbies don't bother...

Yep

It would be a PITA for newbies though..

Dont we all. Yesterday really pissed me off. I deleted tons of the stuff.

I've heard they pay cheap labour to do the actual image reading, the rest is automated.

The spam is really annoying me.

Indeed

Do you know if they all come from the same IPs or are they random? - Maybe you could block them using .htaccess if they do

Yeah, they're pretty much random. I've only seen the same IP address twice.

Mhm, how about to give someone else "Mod"-Rights, or something similar to help you have clean this forum.

I am sure, that all security mechanism will be brokem someday, somehow. Even http://www.planet3dnow.de, which is really good secured against bots like this, sometimes have those spammers.

You should take off some work from you and give it to someone else (in best case to 2 or 3 different persons with different timezones).

My 2 Cents =)

Yes, I've been thinking I will need to add moderators to help with the spam problem.

Do we have any takers? You need to have been here since some time in 2005, and have posted at least 200 posts, and ideally have an addiction that causes you to visit the forums often (several times most days). PM me if you can help. In the PM, also let me know what timezone you're in.

Ok thanks guys, I've added elite, fatman_do and ShiningDragon as mods to help me delete spam.

Now we just need to find someone that hangs out here during the late-shift? That'd be one of you guys in Australia or Hong Kong. jksmurf? With the addition of that timezone we'd have pretty decent coverage of most times of the day. I guess we'll hear from them late in the day.
