I have Windows XP now with
amd64 3200 and 1gb.

I am considering to down grading to 2000, back in the day I loved 2000. To me it seems better, in reality probably not. Your thoughts?

I personally would stay away from Win 2000 (ME). I've had nothing but misery from ME.

Windows ME and Windows 2000 are two different products. ME was was the last of the Win95/98 family. Windows 2000 is from the NT/2000/XP family.

I really prefer the alternative OS solutions (i.e. Unix/Linux, Mac), but as far as windows products go I have liked Windows 2000 Professional better than all their others (and I have used them all). However, 2K is fading fast and the end of life is coming. With the sunset on 2K, the improvements to XP, and the fact that many third party solutions require XP; I think that the edge goes to XP.

BTW, whatever you or anyone else decides, I'd always recommend the Professional series for Windows OS. Worth the extra money.

I liked 2000. To me this was the better Windows OS, but I have since moved to XP Pro as most of the ones where I work use this. Both have behaved well so far, though I think 2000 has less bloat in it.

Cheers,

As stated above, Windows ME is based on the DOS/Windows 98 branch. Windows 2000/XP are based on the Windows NT branch. Windows 2000 and XP are much more stable for this reason.
Unless you are really pressed for cash, I would go with XP Pro.
XP has better multimedia support, better USB stick support, and XP Pro has built in remote desktop control. In my opinion, it is well worth the few extra dollars over XP home.

Definitely Windows XP especially since you have good specs to run it well. I would only recommend Windows 2000 for older systems. You could always dual boot though.

lol Windows ME now there was an operating system! Probably MS's worst ever (No testing, full of bugs, no support!) , I still shudder when people say 'I have a problem on my computer and I have ME installed!'

VMR doesn't work. Also I tried to install on 2000 and it flat out did not want to work, even after installing everything and following the directions to the letter.
