I have been using GBPVR daily for 15 months.

I have always been somewhat disapointed by the playback quality on my tv which was very "vhs like".

I attributed the quality issues to either my Dollar Store cables, my substandard rig or the fact that I was using the coax input to the pvr-150.

Over the weekend I decided to attack the problem. I invested in some nice THX certified cables from monster and switched to the S-Video PVR-150 input. No change.

I then did a lot of reading in the forums and wiki about tweaking playback perofrmance and decided that my problem must be with my decoder. Purchased the Invidia decoder online and installed it. No change.

While typing a support post I described the video I was getting on my TV as looking "kind of like a computer monitor set to 16 bit color". At this point a tiny 15 watt bulb appeared over my head and began to glow dimly.

Before pressing "submit new thread" I had a quick look at my invidia software and discovered I had been watching many hours of tv a week for over a year in 16 bit color.

My playback performance is now nearly indistinguishable from the output of my STB.

I think I may have teared up a little.

I did spend about $60.00 on high quality cables. I see posts in various forums inisting that you should use the best cables you can possibly afford but not sure I'm convinced.

I wonder if I had posted my question in the support forum if anyone would have thought i'd be dumb enough to be running my video card in16 bit color.

I agree - Monster cables are a well-known ripoff (I mean, hdmi cables for $90!? It's DIGITAL ffs; it either works or it doesn't). I also think that there is a lot of misinformation spread about using expensive cables - if you are running over 50' maybe, but for the majority of us I defy anyone to see a difference.

(before I get jumped on, this is not the same as using composite versus coax, or s-vid over composite, etc... more the inflated price of the 'Premium' stuff)

agreed, however they do "look cool" and sadly, this is enough for people to buy them. I got component cables for my Xbox which were basically a monster cable ripoff, and I will have to say they are just as good. and in conclusion... monoprice

"They do look cool" LOL... you are right. And the day I blow hundreds of dollars on cables because they look cool is probably the day I have to start looking for a new wife... Smile
