How secure is the EWA login (and you'll have to use laymans terms for me...)? Am I being particularly stupid leaving port 7647 open to the world????

It is open.....but when you come in from the outside network you are prompted to log in. The user id and password are contained in the GBPVR config file which is not in the web directory.

So if you change the user id and password in the gbpvr config utility to something other than the default you should be fine.

Also.....the PC running GBPVR should have a firewall running that only allows in 7647(and 7648 if you are streaming) as well.....that way you have the router protecting your systems plus a local firewall on the GBPVR host machine.

What steps do I need to take to allow one particular outside computer to access my local GB_PVR using the local port? I am thinking that my daughter in St. Catharines can access my GBPVR programs recorded on my computer in Ottawa. If my assumptions are right, this is what I think I need to do.

I think I need to give the other person the userid and password and the link to the website. Since I can't access the link found in the wiki from my computer that hasn't downloaded GB-pvr, I assume that the other computer must download GB-pvr first. I noticed that the capture source tab has a box to click "act as client". Is that all that is needed for the external computer to be a client to my main GB-pvr? How do you decide if you want to do streaming or not? Since my "port" number seems to the the same as Fuzzweed's, how will this external computer know how to access my port 7647 and not someone else's?

Is there any downside for the main computer that has GBPVR and is connected to cable to having a client as well? That is, will the client's access of the programs recorded on the main computer slow down the watching of shows on the server GB_PVR?

I realize that I also need to find out how to set my firewall to allow that external computer access to my computer (which I should be able to do on my own or with the help of the Syngate instructions).

Anything else I should know or read before trying to set up a client computer?
