this is more of a curiosity question but i had a network conflict happen yesterday. My wifes computer kept popping up a box that said there was a conflict with another system on the network.

I went into the router, a netgear fvs318 to see if i could see anything there. I saw my wifes computer and mine and another system and all seemed well. I shut down everything and restarted and all has been well since.

My question is i got to thinking later that i didn't' see the MVP's listed in the router, only the computer systems. Is that normal? I assume the router is giving them an IP address but they dint' show in the router anywhere, they function very well so I'm not going to worry too much about it but i do wonder why they wouldn't show up in the list of ip address' that were given out by the router?

They should show up if they're being assigned IPs by your router's DHCP server. Mine do. They won't if you're using the Hauppauge service, but I assume you're are doing that being a GBPVR user.

The error you ran into can happen if you have a statically assigned IP address that gets used by the router with a DHCP assignment. If you have any static assignments, either hard-coded on the computer or statically assigned via the static DHCP mode some routers support, you'd want them to be outside the range of the normal DHCP server IPs.

I have a Linksys and they show up. They don't show a hardware name ('cause you can't name the MVP) but the MAC address does show up for each MVP. Can you look at it by MAC address on a Netgear router?

This is all most curious, the MVP's all all working just great, makes me wonder where they're getting an IP address from, if not from the router. I don't have the MVP software installed so it's not that. I'm not running any DHCP software. They're all connected directly to the router so to me the router must know they are there someyhow. Looking at the screens in the router setup i see the ip, name and mac address of the 3 attached computers but nothing on the MVP's.

I do have two IP address' in the router reserved for two systems so i'm able to log in from outside the home network.

Perhaps it's just a oddity of the netgear router. I don't really know. I'll have to dig through my box of stuff i'm not using and see if i have another router laying around for a test.

It'll give me something to play with while i wait for the next version. Smile
