I had a crack at a sort of introduction to a year ago ...

http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/Codec#toc1

Not sure if it helps but it is a start.

problem with the "where to get them" is: there're almost always to be paid for and usualy come with video oder tuner cards. you might try your luck with some codec packs (source will be rather dubios Wink)

on muxes:
- cyberlink is the only easily available from the twinhan site (do a search on the forum with cyberlink & twinhan for download directions)
- intervideo: i remember sub posting something like "rather crappy & not worth the money"
- ATI: comes together with a ATI card? dunno Big Grin
- DVR-MS: most users seem to be happy with that (i still haven't tried it yet)
- Transport Stream: still officialy unsupported (?), just for sub's debugging delight Big Grin (no muxing involved, saves the raw stream, problem is there's no support for playback in GBPVR)

on codecs:
- it's a question of philosophy, as 3 different people, you'll get 5 opinions Wink
- for where to get them: see on muxes above...
- from own experience: i'm using cyberlink mux/codec on main machine (still not so happy at the moment, not enough time to play around, depends on nvidia video card involved?), on client machine, i'm playing around with GPL MPEG 1/2 decoder, no issues till now

Correct, but there is also a new "TS Mux" option in the v0.99.5 release which can be used by you guys. It only records the audio/video stream to the transport stream file it generates (rather than a very large full transport stream).

The "TS MUX" is working well so far for me (Hauppauge HVR1600) and the files are compatible with other HD tuner cards (like MyHD) along with native support using Media Player Classic.

The DVR-MS mux can be used even without MCE or even WinXP. Most of the files are available as a hotfix direct from MS for XPsp1. They will register and work under Windows 2000 but you will need sbeio.dll from somewhere (ver 9.0.0.3165). I don't think the hotfix files are intended for XPsp2 however.

DVR-MS has been working well for me, until I tried to view a recording I'd made of the Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" concert, and was told that I wasn't entitled to open the file. The GB-PVR reaction was to do nothing when i tried to watch it (just a black screen). Media Payer gave me the message about rights.

I'm still using it, because it generally works well, but when I have time, I'll try to find a different combination that works well in all cases.
