Couple of ideas - not sure if anyone has suggested them previously . I currently also run myhtpc on one TV AV channel and GB-PVR over the other (using the 350 Tv Out). In myHTPC I've set up a DVD ripping module. I was thinking it would be a good idea to be able to do 1 step DVD ripping or transcoding via a plugin. There are a couple of programs that can be controlled via the command line (maybe even use an AutoGK type setup to go straight to DivX).
An alternative Idea would be to use something like DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD to the HD (Just take the main movie), and then convert to an MPEG2 file, that way it could be played through the TV out of the 350.
Anyway - hopefully not too rambling.

Cheers

Hi,

to get dvd decrypter to just grab the movie is easy (all the command line options are in the read me file)- I set it to create a single large VOB file. I do have problems with trying to play it using the IFO file, I just point ZOOM player at the VOB to get round it.

That part of the plugin could almost be done using a batch file, it's the conversion to plain MPEG2 that Im not sure about.

Cheers

I read up breifly on the VOB file specification. It seems it's basically an mpeg file with program and other information added in like camera angles. If a plug in read the VOB file, stripped everything except the mpeg file using one camera angle and fed the mpeg stream to the 350 TV-Out as a normal file, it would make at least a very basic DVD player. There shouldn't need to be any decoding and re-encoding so the CPU wouldn't be tied up too much.

Am I wrong?

The PVR350 cant handle the AC3 audio in a VOB. You're best off trying to find a tool that can rip a DVD directly to a normal MPEG2 file with stereo audio. (A DVD to SVCD tool will probably be able to do this).

It seems a DVD plugin is very do-able then since the only real conversion that needs to be done is audio. I may look into giving it a try. Do you know if anyone is working on one? I'd prefer to help someone out rather than try to learn it all from scratch.

BTW I appreciate your attentativeness to support questions. I don't find this with other support forums.

Use something like mencoder/mplayer combo to transcode the vob to an mpeg file. Its pretty good quailty and its fast.
