Hi,

I've been scouring these forums for a few days now looking for answers. So far I've found a lot of answers and have got my system up and running pretty well. It's a great community. Now I have a question that I haven't found an answer to. If someone knows where to point me or has an answer, I'd appreciate it mightily!

The computer I'm using for GBPVR is an Athlon 2400+ with 768MB RAM. The HD TV card I'm using is the Vbox Cat's Eye 150. The graphics card is a GeForce Ti4600. I have GBPVR installed on the C: drive, which has about 5GB out of 80GB remaining. I have the recording set up on my H: drive which is the second partition of a 250GB drive and has about 100GB available. My page file is set to use between 768 and 1536MB on C:.

Here's my problem:

I can watch live TV just fine on the HD channels if the HD isn't really HD. That uses about 40% processor power. But if I tune to an NBC or PBS or other real HD show in 1080i or 720p, the live TV playback gets very choppy, stuttering like others have described. My processing power goes up to 90-100%.

If I record these HD shows, however, I can then watch the recording in Windows Media Player (10 I think) just fine, with no choppiness at all (except for one channel, which is a little bit jumpy from time to time, mysteriously). I can live with the recording working and having to watch it back in WMP, but am just wondering why in the world GBPVR can't deal with the live or recorded stream. I've tried a few different video codecs. the default Windows one seems to work best, followed by Intervideo. The Microsoft mux works best for recording. The Intervideo one seems ok, but the Cyberlink only records audio for some reason. My processor is only using like 4-5% when recording the show, btw... very nice!

I've heard of lesser computers on this board dealing with with HD just fine for playback, so I wonder what else could be the problem. Maybe I should install GBPVR on a hard drive with more space?

Anyway, thanks for reading! And thanks in advance for any ideas.

I think I just read a few hours ago that using overlay works better in this case then vmr.
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

Oh yeah, I'm using VMR7. Overlay just gives me a black screen.

This CPU combined with this graphics card is probably marginal when you're high def 1080i video.

As HtV said though, make sure you try Overlay, since it has lower CPU requirements.

What video decoder do you have selected on the playback tab of the config app?

Neither 'Intervideo' nor 'System Default' work when I have it in Overlay mode. I also have GPL MPEG but that doesn't do HD. Could that be interfering somehow? I recall overlay working awhile ago, maybe before I installed that GPL codec.

I dont know. I'd try to get some more decoders to try with HD. Neither the Intervideo or gplmpgdec are reknowned for good hd playback. Most people doing HD seem to use decoders by nvidia, cyberlink, elecard or zulu (dvico fusion decoder).

Ah ok, thanks! I'll try out those decoders. In looking at HD playback in WMP, I see the CPU's at 70-80%, which is good enough that it isn't all jittery. I guess the overhead of VMR is just enough to make it jittery in GBPVR.

Hmm, I've tried the purevideo, cyberlink, and zulu decoders. None give me any better results, and I still can't use overlay mode for some reason.

Will a newer video card take enough strain off the CPU? I'm looking at a 6600gt, 6800, or maybe 7300gs I believe. Apparently, the TI series of Geforces doesn't do squat for HD.

Zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

It'd certainly help.
