Hi,

Excellant plugin love the concept, this is a must have for GBPVR

Feature request. would it be possible to not call realplayer directly for real streams and let the system decide what it is the default player for the real stream, reson being I loath real player ans instead use realalt which is an excellant alternative to real player.

Cheers

Glad you like it. You probably noticed that the "Find Stations" feature lists a bunch of NZ stations including several in Wellington. I wanted to make sure that GBPVR-HQ was well served. Wink
(And what is that wierd bird call that Radio NZ International uses as its "dead air" marker? I'm guessing its a Kiwi?).

Firstly, I share your hatred for RealPlayer. Unfortunately there's always that handful of "must have" streams that are only available as RealAudio (although some of the major holdouts, like the BBC, are gradually moving to WMP, I notice). Ideally, I'd use VLC for everything (for lots of reasons) but since those French guys seem to hate Real even more than we do, they have stated they will never support RealPlayer formats until the codecs are made public (which will be when hell freezes over).

Actually, de facto, VLC will play quite a lot of RealAudio streams, nonetheless. Have you tried using VLC to play the particular streams you're interested in? If that works, you can edit the favourites file so it will use VLC instead of RealPlayer (or just use Timeshift play, which uses VLC to transcode the stream to mp3).

In order to make UbuRadio easy to configure and use, I decided to confine playback options to using the GB-PVR mp3 audio player (Timeshift mode) or one of three embedded internal players (Preview mode). Since embedded activex players are currently available for VLC, WMP and RealPlayer, I chose to use those. So it's not that easy for me to support any other players.

However my other plugin, UbuStream, allows you to use any player you like for playback. With the current version, you could, for instance, set up groups of audio stream stations and configure each station to play with any external player you like (as long as it can be executed on the command line with the URL as a command line argument). I've used both RealAlt and QuickTimeAlt with it successfully. You just have to add them as new players, using the UbuStream config app. The next release of UbuStream will let you choose between all three playback modes - external player, internal player and GB-PVR player.

With UbuStream, I'm trying to offer as many features and as much versatility as possible for both audio and video streams. However, with versatility comes complexity and some people may feel that configuring it is too onerous a chore. So I designed UbuRadio to be a no-brainer, instant gratification kinda thingy. Sort of like an iPod versus a professional audio mixer.

ubu,

Not sure what's going on but it works perfectly in Preview Mode, but not in Timeshift either on PC or MVP.

Also when I go into Ubsutream Config, I get that error again (this is after that initial install). Same issue with .Net version?

Maybe uninstall .Net 3.0 Big Grin (Just kidding!).

Does sound like you may still have some issue with the UbuRecordingService (which Timeshift mode uses to do its magic!). Do you have an easy way to look at the processes running (Process Explorer or something)? If so, here's what you should see: when UbuRadio first loads it will start up the service so you should see an UbuRecordingService process show up. When you start playing a station in Timeshift mode, you should see a VLC process start up under the recording service process. Then you should see that process start clocking CPU. If that's all working as it should, then try increasing the wait time on the UbuRadio config panel (you should do this anyway for MVP use - maybe 10,000 ms).

If you still can't get Timeshift mode working, let me have the gbpvr.exe.log and I'll take a look.

On your problem with the UbuStream config app, I've no idea. There shouldn't be any dependencies between UbuStream and UbuRadio. Can you let me know what the error message says?

I have PE.

This is where it goes whacko... VLC disappears and does not clock any CPU... ??

Let's start with the easy stuff:

You're trying to start the UbuStream config app by using the UbuStream Config button in the UbuRecordingService controller window. It's trying to run the UbuStreamConfig.exe app and its not finding it (it should be in your Plugins directory). This is most likely because you have a very old version of UbuStream installed. The UbuStreamConfig.exe app is a wrapper app (so you don't have to run the GB-PVR config app every time you want to add a station to your UbuStream database) that I introduced for UbuStream v2.0. If you have a pre 2.0 version, you need to upgrade. I'm not supporting the earlier versions any more.

Regarding your UbuRadio Timeshift play problem, the logs you sent aren't very revealing. I see UbuRadio being loaded. I see it being unloaded. I don't see you attempting to play a station in Timeshift mode. However, your zip is missing gbpvr.exe-1.log which probably had that data in it.

(For simplicity of debugging, it would help if you switch off your MVP server and restart the recording service before doing this.) Close GB-PVR and start it again on your PC and then try to play a station with the Timeshift Play button. Then send me the logs from that. If possible, also send me your event log (Control Panel->Admin Tools->Event Viewer - then right click on Applications and choose Save log to file).

Argghhhh. OK, I wasn't aware of that (You might want to highlight that as a dependency to the WIKI instructions.) [EDIT] Yup, Ubustream 2 fixed that Config error.

OK I'll have to get back to you on that. [EDIT]Log attached.

[EDIT] btw in Preview mode, using RealPlayer, is there any way to minimize the Grey Real Player Window? The window can't be moved or minimized as fas as I can make out?

UbuRadio doesn't require UbuStream to be installed. The UbuStream Config button on the UbuRecordingService console is there because the next (soon to be released) version of UbuStream will also use the recording service. In any case, the button will work fine if you have the current version of UbuStream installed. The wiki page for UbuStream makes it fairly clear that v2.0 is the current (supported) version and that all earlier versions are designated as "legacy" (deprecated and not supported).

Quote: Log attached.
Well, to cut to the bottom line, your main problem seems to be that you are trying to play a RealAudio stream in Timeshift mode (http://www.ndr.de/ramgen/live/ndr2.rm). VLC does not support RealAudio. Period. (However, a few RA streams will play with VLC nonetheless. This one, for instance: http://www.kcsm.org/8002.ram).

From your logs, it looks like you only have one station in your Favourites list. Have you tried any other stations in Timeshift mode? All the WMP and MP3 streams should work. If in doubt, try playing the stream with VLC (outside of UbuRadio and GB-PVR). If it plays, it should work in Timeshift mode.

I imagine this will solve your problem. If it doesn't, here's some pointers for sending me logs next time:
  • Make sure the gbpvr logs and the event log cover the same period. (The ones you sent were several hours apart so I was looking at "apples and oranges").
  • Turn off your the MVP server. (Set the number of MVPs to zero in the GB-PVR config app).
  • Make sure that you have all the gbpvr.exe.log files in the zip. (This one was missing gbpvr.exe-1.log again.)
Quote: btw in Preview mode, using RealPlayer, is there any way to minimize the Grey Real Player Window? The window can't be moved or minimized as fas as I can make out?
The other players display visualizations but RealPlayer, because it's stupid, can't do this so it just sits there looking dumb. I'm going to add a "Hide player in Preview mode" option in the next release (probably in the next few days) of UbuRadio. Hopefully, that should accommodate your needs.

Yes only one ATM. Just a test one. I'll try some others, although I'm fairly confident that choosing the alternative to RA will work. I had that station working with the v1.x (older) Ubustream.

Not your fault. It took me a while to figure out what was going on too. Just shutting down the MVP itself or killing the server window doesn't stop GB-PVR from starting the MVP server again when it restarts the GB-PVR recording service. The only way is to go into the MVP tab of the config app and set "Number of servers to autostart" to zero.

The reason I asked you to do this is that a) the log entries between the MVP and the server clutter up the log (and fill it up pretty quickly) and b) I notice that when the MVP server is running, not all the messages from the PC instance of GB-PVR (non-MVP) show up in the log (not sure why).

Similar problem with your missing gbpvr.exe-1.log file. I notice that sometimes that is missing when I'm running a regular GB-PVR instance and an MVP server instance on the same machine. Maybe it gets confused and overwrites its own log or something.
