Hi all,

I've just bought myself a Sony Bravia HDTV 1080p.

I decided to download a HD episode of 24 in 1080p format (700MB) and although it plays on my PC it will not play over the MVP.

Any ideas warmly welcomed please.

Kind regards.

The MVP can only play standard definition video MPEG1 or MPEG2 video - no exceptions.

Depending on the file type, it can somtimes transcode the other file types to standard definition MPEG2 on the fly for you, but you need to have a fair bit of CPU for this to working.

I just tried the same episode at 720p and it works.

Then stopped the gb-pvr server and started the basic hauppageone and get the error "Data server CPU not fast enough for transcoding media"....what a bummer!

Backs up what you said - thanks.

So how much faster than a 2Gig CPU do you reckon I'll need? I feel another upgrade coming on...

I've not done it myself with 1080p video, so I dont really know. It needs to be able to both decode and re-encode the video at the same time, in faster than realtime, so thats quite a bit of CPU. I'd probably suggest a dual core machine of some sort.

Aha...right, in the gb-pvr config I changed the decoder from system default to "MainConcept (Hauppage) MPEG Video" and now it plays back through the MVP - however, it doesn't look HD Sad

Looking at task manager I can see ffmpeg taking 99% of the CPU, I guess this is normal.

"The MVP can only play standard definition video MPEG1 or MPEG2 video - no exceptions."

- no exceptions at all?

If I want to watch HDTV downloads from PC on my new telly, apart from a very long VIDEO cable to the the TV, can you recommend a device that will play it over the network?

Very kind regards.

No exceptions. As I said above, this device can only play standard definition MPEG video, so its definitely not going to look HD because its not - its been downscaled to standard definition, and probably lost heaps of its quality during the 'on the flying' transcode.

Thanks for that.

Any suggestions for playing HD media from the PC to the TV?

Most people just use a videocard to connect their PC to their TV. An nvidia 6600 or higher is usually recommended if you want to do HD.

Thanks, I figured that. My problem though is that I have a PC in the cellar with all my media on it and the TV is about 15 metres of cabling away. I could run a video cable to the TV and use is as a second monitor, however, I will lose the benefit of the remote control facility.

I think I'm going to have to look at a seperate system to sit under the telly
