Wouldn't it be nice if we could cut back XP to just the components required to support GB-PVR and the elements that could be expected to be needed in a media PC. You've save disk space, memory and processor cycles.

I tend to run a reasonably lean copy but there are all sorts of services I don't dare switch off, and stuff I don't dare delete, just in case.

Thoughts, possible project for someone?

- Noisy NAS: Xeon / Intel mobo / 16GB RAM / FreeNAS + Ubuntu VMs on VMware ESXi + 12TB RAID

pBS was working on creating a thumb drive client. Don't know if it would help you, but here's the thread.

I've been working on making an nlited version of XP that is barebones. By the time I'm done, it will hopefully install all the codecs and stuff that I want, as well as everything else that I use (HIP, irtrans, etc...)

My goal is to get it to eventually put the cd in and let it run. It will do an unattended xp setup, then install everything that i normally use, then I'll just have to install gbpvr and restore my settings that I keep a backup of.

Right now I'm setting up the codecs and such to be installed automatically for me, then I'll slim down XP. I've slimmed it down some...but not near enough.

Long story short...if you figure out what to slim down...you'll be saving me the frustration of the whole test/repeat/test process. If not, I'll eventually get it done myself. Smile

BTW...it's been awhile since I've installed gbpvr...does the installer have a silent install option?

Thanks for the vote - but if I had the time, I'd have done it... Smile

I have used nlite to make a slim down version of XP Pro/SP2 and have been using it for nearly 3 months now. It's much more responsive than the full blown XP.

I was able to install .Net2, KLite Codec Pack, GBPVR v99.05, Omega ATI Drivers, HIP and all other drivers and plugins without a problem.

I even customized my services for gaming, making XP even faster. Altogether, I only have 9 services set to start automatically and all the other set to disable or manual.

You might want to look into a product called XPLite. http://www.litepc.com/
I've used it for setting up public access computers in libraries. It does what it says & does not cause system instability.

C'mon then, mbox. Won't you post your nlite preset here?

Their used to be a chap on the net who listed all of the services that XP loaded during startup, the chap who called himself the 'BlackViper' went on to list which services could be disabled and which cant. Apparently this guide that he wrote, if followed we allow xp to load with only 10 services compared to the normal 30+.
Their was also some benchmarcks that he did using a normal XP O/S with the default services compared to his version without all of the services. The benchmarks showed a significant difference between the two.

If you do a google search for BlackViper and XP Services then you will find some information.

Out of curiosity, which os is best to use with GBPVR? By best i mean, the most responsive and does not require a decent spec rig?

Cheers
