I would like to code a plugin that reads ahead in the closed captioning for a program and looks for vulgar language and them mutes the audio at that time in the playback. I would like this to be real time if possible; for live tv, dvd, and tv recordings if the data exists. My question is this: How can I get the closed caption stream so I can look for the appropriate words?

Alternatively, you could just make sure you watch/record TV programmes that have either been censored before transmission or that don't contain any 'foul' language in the first place. WRT DVDs, you can always read the label on the back before buying/hiring them.

Sorry - I don't see your logic. Besides, in order to develop such a plugin (which would be a lot harder than you think) you'd have to put together a dictionary of 'foul' language. If you could stomach that, then you'd just see them as words - most of which pre-date us by many centuries.

Cheers,
Brian

The real thing would be how to get the captions data at all, at least in the US.

And also closed captioning and subtitles never follow the audio exactly so you would end up muting a whole sentence or scene!

Seems like this is not such a popular idea. I am not trying to force the plugin to be required with GBPVR, only available to those who might find it useful. And the language I am trying to filter out is not in movies with prevalent cursing (those movies can just be avoided by looking at the rating as mentioned previously) but the occasional word in my favorite sitcoms. It sounds like the project may be above my coding abilities and have some inherent pitfalls anyway.

I don't know how you can get it in realtime, but mpg2srt will create a text file with the captions if you have a Hauppauge card like the pvr150.

Thanks for the info. I am working with an AverHD TV card. I am not sure if it includes CC in the mpeg file or not.

Did you ever make any progress on this one? I am looking for the same thing. http://tvguardian.com is a hardware product that does exactly what we are wanting. However, I don't like the limitations of how you can use their products. I would love to get a GBPVR plugin that would have very similar features.

BTW, there is a sample video on their website under "Learn More and Demo Video" if anybody wants to see what we are talking about.

Sorry, there is nothing like this in GB-PVR.
