VLC won't play avis over network ?

Trying to play divx avi's over a network through VLC - via telnet. VLC complains it can't play the file because it has no "access module" even though it will play the same file when it resides on the host machine (via Windows). I am trying to play the file via the mvpmc interface by clicking on the file, do I need to set up an .m3u playlist for it ?
Or could someone elaborate on the following from the Wiki :

1. Create a playlist item with the filename of the video file as it would be accessed by
VLC. Typically the http: identifier is not needed when the file is being accessed locally.

or

2. If the mvpmc and VLC see exactly the file and pathname, video files can be
directly accessed. Note that VLC on Windows can use unix style path names and could play
/video/sample.divx. If drive letters are required only option 1 is available.

Also..
There is When I first started the telnet interface in VLC it set up the Windows firewall automatically, but I also have a firewall on my router, should I open the http port 5212 on that so VLC can stream back to mvpmc ?

They file needs to have the same name for example if the file is c:\recordings\rory.avi mvpmc must see it as
/recordings/rory.avi

This has nothing to do with share names it is the name of the file as seen by the os. Note the c: on the Windows host side. If you are using Vista you can get around this with symbolic links otherwise you are forced to use the true c: drive. As a linux user this whole notion of drive letters is a bit frustrating.

The access method error sounds like a firewall problem, I recommended opening up vlc.exe to all tcp.

If you are talking about the WAN firewall on the router that won't have an impact on a local LAN.
