I am in the process of rebuilding my development machine after a crash. Has anybody bumped up to the 2008 version of Visual Studio IDE yet?

I don't want to cause compatibility problems, so I am hesitant to make the jump before I understand the consequences.

So far, so good, couple things:
  • Apparently does nothing to the code. Just the .sln and .csproj files.
  • I made back-up copies of all those files prior to running the conversion wizard on the 2005 project.
  • In the project properties, you can select what version of .net to target for the build. I set it to 2.0
  • All modules compiled with no errors (Plugins and supporting DLLs)
  • Both MovieWiz and SearchWiz ran successfully
  • Single-step debugging seems to work fine.
The UI is basically the same at first glance. So no big suprises, and has the advantage of being able to choose your target .net environment.

Thanks for the comments. I'll give it a go one of these days (on my other machine).

Has anyone seen the full VS2008? To see what's different.. Also that one depends on which version, Tester, Architect etc.

Update:

After using VS2008 (Express) for a couple of weeks, I've noticed problems with the IDE 'slowing down' when switching between Form Edit mode and Code edit mode. The slowdowns are significant, ranging from 2-3 seconds up to approx 20 or more seconds.

I've googled and found a significant amount of posts on this problem, but no real solutions as of yet.

Although it seems to be completely compatible with doing GBPVR development, I'd recommend waiting for the 1st service pack to fix some of these performance problems.

Have there been any updates via the Windows Update path that have improved the performance issues?

I just downloaded the DVD iso image of the full suite of VS2008 editions but haven't installed yet. Do the VS2008 editions co-exist with VS2005 in the same way as it's possible to have VS2005 on a machine with VS2003? I don't want to lose VS2005 if VS2008 is going to give me problems.

Cheers,
Brian

yeah they do....my work machine has VS2003, 2005 and 2008

All quite happy together.

If you want to play with your projects in 2008, copy the csproj and sln files since it does seem to update both of those and add a <version>9.x.x.x.</version> which stops the csproj from being loaded in vs2005.

I haven't experienced any speed issues, I experienced some issues installing (I'm sure related to my clogged hard drive at the time). But am now running both 2005 (express) and 2008 (express)

I'm not sure what I've changed, or maybe what patches have been applied via WindowsUpdate, but I am no longer experiencing the slow down issues anymore.
