Hey,

I am looking into purchasing a domain name through either GoDaddy or a competitor. I am currently using the free service provided by No-IP.com and it has been working great; hopefully someone here will be familiar with this service. I do not want to host a website on any outside server. The purpose for the domain name, in my case, is for me to personally login through Remote Desktop Connection and to direct people to my FTP site. When I do have a website up, I host it through IIS on my own box.

I've been using No-IP.com's free service for 3 or 4 years now, and maybe I should upgrade there since I know the service, but GoDaddy is cheaper and cheaper is better for me right now if GoDaddy's service can provide the same.

Just looking for anyones 2 cents that might be doing the same thing as me.

Thanks,

Dan

I run about 30 domains on a server inside my house but they are all on static IPs. I also have a domain hosted at GoDaddy for about $6 or $7 a month. You can also check out 1 and 1. They have some great hosting prices. http://www.1and1.com

I know this post is old but try http://www.freedomain.co.nr for your IP if you have one, even if you have the files hosted on some budget server like geocities, freewebs etc. It has a address bar code to update your IP if dynamic, if static it's ideal.

This masks out the free server (i.e freewebs) and is the shortest proper domain name without using no-ip type addresses and you'll get for free, in other words no money and no subdomain.

So if you have a static IP you can assign the domain name like mysitename.co.nr
and it has some cool options, only con, place a referral image on the main page visibly on the site in mention.
