Hi. My name is Bryan Anderson and I have a HVR-1600 with QAM support. I am using the latest drivers and the latest WinTV application. When I scan for QAM channels in WinTV. I get about 50 channels that are detected. However none actually give me any picture or sound. Also i have noticed from screen shots of over people who use WinTV that when they scan for channels in QAM, they actually get the names of the stations like WFOX or WNBC. I on the other hand i get just qam-1, qam-2. Now I have done this in both NJ with Comcast and in PA with comcast and i get the same result. It pissed me off so much that i tried this program. Again i scan and get like 50 channels but no picture. Now my analog signal works fine and Im guessing since im detecting channels that my board is nto defective. I have everything installed and I have absolutely no idea whats wrong. Any help would be amazing.

Thank you.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will help but I can only tell you that I got more 40 QAM channels in WinTV but only 1 actually was a picture and I could find none in GBPVR. I just assumed it was Cox Cable causing the problems.

Whether or not you get real channel names is up to the broadcaster. The channel names are contined in the stream in a thing called the 'virtual channel table'. This table is always transmitted with over-the-air ATSC transmissions, but is optional with QAM digital cable transmissions. Unfortunately most cable broardcasters dont transmit this info so the application has to make up some random name for the channel.

If you not getting any channel audio/video then its possible your broadcaster is encrypting all its channels. I think avsforums and the hdhomerun forums both maintain some lists about which channels are carried unencrypted on various cable networks/locations.

Check out this thread:
http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...hlight=QAM
for a little more info on this card.

I never get the channel names via WinTV - I do, however, get SOME channel names using the GBPVR scan tuner app. Also, some have reported getting more channels in general using the GBPVR scan app. I should remind you that you may have to change your qam.ini file as prescribed in that thread. There's a post midway (like page 11 or 12) that has those .ini file that help with the scanning. But overall, it's up to the cable company like Sub said. I scanned my channels 1 month ago and only had 3 channels with names listed. Over the past month I lost some channels so I decided to scan them again. After rescanning, it turns out that the cableco moved some channels around but there were now like 10 channels with the names.

So the moral of the story is that the cable co's futz around with these QAM channels FREQUENTLY and that the names are up to them to put them in. Also, that WinTV sucks other than a sanity check. On my system, WinTV doesn't have any sound!

You might want to call your cable company and ask them about it. If their support is like Cox in the New Orleans area, start drinking before you make the call.

Try viewing one of these channels, then zip and attach the pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx2.exe-native.log files and I'll take a look.
