would it be useful if Comskip could decode TS VBI/CC data?
It could be used to improve the commercial detection (when used with a library of "unwanted" words) or to generate .srt or .bin files.
What I am investigating is to integrate ccextractorwin functionality into Comskip

First, you would have to contact ccextractorwin developer to fix it. I used it (with dvr-ms files from OTA channels) and it works perfectly for certain channels (like ABC and CBS), but for example we have a channel called CW50 and ccextractorwin always shows text (srt files) a minute ahead and sometimes produces a lot of garbled text.
I understand VBI is for cable or satellite channels and I don't have access to those.

vbi is in all signals IIRC...vertical blanking interval...the space between 2 frames..used to squeeze in cc's and other user data...
while ccextract may not work perfectly, they are done by standards and work perfectly on a tv set that does follow standards...so should be viable..

Erik, i thought it already did this? [or it used to!]

that info also shows exactly where commercials are, cuz the electronic 'signature' of a show stays same, the comms. are diff. levels...
inside vbi is a fool proof method of telling them apart..[it's what broadcasters use]
been a while since i looked into it tho..

What I'd like to see is a way to delete this information from the file. I don't know if this is possible but sometimes with letter-boxed captures of 16:9 broadcasts on a 4:3 screen it can be really annoying.

If, as pBS says,

"that info also shows exactly where commercials are...inside vbi is a fool proof method of telling them [commercials] apart [from the show itself]",

then YES. Make a completely foolproof commercial detection algorithm. Should work even for programs that are not Close Captioned, right?

Yes, but only for recordings made with a PVR250 or PVR350.
I consider adding the decoder for DVB-T and ATSC recordings.
Can someone run ccextractorwin on (with the -srt and -bin switch) on a complete show and send met the output? Preferably with some information on where the commercials are (like the edl output)

There is indeed a difference between the data from the show part and from the commercials but there seems to be an huge amount of info missing. Still some improvements needed for CCextratorwin. The small examples I tried where producing better results.
Will have to think about how to proceed
