I'd like to here comments on how you guys would like to see WOL implemented with mvpmcx2 and GBPVR. The problem is that with mvpmc it was easy since the app and all the utilities are on the MVP in contrast to mvpmcx2 which has all the apps, scripts etc on the very machine you likely want to wake up.

I would think ultimately syabas woulde need to add WOL to the share configuration. Otherwise installing on a thumb or internal drive the way Jon does his mvpmc plugin edition port of mvpmc seems the only other option.

Ultimately mvpmc plugin edition will run from a share too that is a design goal. After all mpvmcx2 is going to be a plugin to one day. I don't mind copying ether-wake to the pch like I do with utelnetd now since I want these independent of the share until they are in the Syabas busybox like they should be. Jon's full busybox won't available when the share is gone.

I still think I can come with a solution if people want it.

Yes please!
I have only recently started using the WOL with an MVP and found it worked a treat. Only problem was having to leave the MVP powered up. Are you saying the PCH version could mean even that can be powered off? If so, that gets my vote!

It certainly would be a very nice thing to have.
I've still not had time to sort everything out, let alone educate myself about available memory on the PCH, so can't comment on the best way to implement it. I've not got my head round the best usage of the beast for me yet - do folk have multiple methods of using the PCH - with something like a NAS box of ripped DVD's and then dropping into GBPVR for scheduling and watching recorded shows?. I guess a USB stick might be the easiest, silent, way of doing it??

Whatever, I'm grateful for your contribution.

The PCH like the MVP can't be powered off and it is the same issue, the remote control is software controlled. In standby mode most of the power drain is in the ac adapter so it has to be unplugged at the wall.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way, to run the client, everyone has different needs I just want to be flexible.

Strangely enough I was thinking exactly the same setup. NAS for the DVDrips and downloaded TV shows and GBPVR for Scheduling and Recording TV.

If that could be done with PCH controlling a PC that can S3 sleep when idle. I'd attach a USB stick to a PCH if it was needed to be able to do all of that.

Although a NAS might struggle to serve HD content. I could see my HD content being on the GBPVR PC. That might confuse matters!

I think the adding WOL to mvpmcx2 would be useful, even if it only helped those people running of disks that dont got to sleep, like from a share on a NAS or a USB stick. It'd be nice to also have a scheme that also covers users running from a share on the machine they want to wake, but I suspect that is a harder one to solve Big Grin

I've got an IDE to SD interface board hopefully coming from a Chinese ebayer.
For me, just having something like an extra line in telnet.html would work for me as an interim measure.
As stated though, it belongs in the firmware/kernel

well, you can set windows up such that it allows the network card to wake it up on any activity, my card does not support WOL (magic packet) but it still wakes up my system when I hit it over the network (browse to its network file shares). The only problem with this that other things can keep your system awake, or randomly wake it up.
