Again, why do you think that there's a huge difference between recovery and downgrading? Did you even try? I'm not trying to waste your time or mine, and I have done it myself.

"upgrading" and "recover" are the same thing no matter what name you give it. Either way, you are programming a non-volatile memory chip. The method for doing it should be the same whether you are "upgrading" or "downgrading".

I disagree, since recovery is done by the kernel and up/downgrading are done through the browser interface it will even do upgrades over the internet. You cannot even use the recovery process to downgrade because of the the move from the 01-15-* to the 01-17-* kernel.

Ah. I wasn't aware that there was a recovery that was done by the kernel. I stand corrected.

Either way, I downgraded from the latest stepping-stone firmware to the older, as I had some problems with the remote not working - or doing 4 x key presses for each one (and inserting other random ones)
I followed the instructions regarding navigating & running the html file. After downgrading, still happened, turned out all of the my IR remotes had the same problem. Upgraded via internet again, no issues.

I too have had problems with the Popcorn hour. The first one that I got kept locking up. I wasn't sure if I had a problem or if it was just one of those things with this device. I was going through all the menus and locking it up every 10 minutes or so. Finally (Still on the first day), it locked up and it was gone. After troubleshooting with MediaTank, they RMA'ed it.
The second one worked much better. I still had lockups but nothing like before. In the first day I probably had 2 times that it locked up. Then day two the network portion of the board burned out. Makes it kind of useless without a network connection. So MediaTank RMA'ed that one. Now I'm waiting on my third one. Hopefully I will get a good one this time. It has been about 3 months and I have only had a working one about 2 days. I was able to get it going with GBPVR. It worked nice and I was impressed, but at this rate my warranty will expire before I get a working unit.

Although I still am happy with two PCH's (I check for a hot Ethernet port all the time), after martin123's post I did get in contact with another vendor and alex.brokenarrow came to try GB-PVR to confirm that the hdx 900 works There was also a timely report that egreat works to add to the istarhd that dirkomatic has, so the Popcorn isn't the only vendor even though the they are the biggest. It also means potentially buyers need to critically review the market because the hardware does vary between manufactures.
I am going to continue to follow this on the NMT forums and I think as long as the RMA's are being approved Popcorn hours seems to be committed, and I still haven't noticed a trend. I do have a completely useless MediaMVP D3 here at home from a bad batch at Hauppauge so I know how frustrating this kind of problem is. If any more PCH RMA's are reported here I will take this to Popcorn Hour because they value GB-PVR integration enough to report it on their web site. Martin

I'll keep my eye on this thread. In my case the PCH works(ed) brilliantly for my purposes with sub and Martins software. My only problem is the reliability and support path. What I suffered seems to be one of the more common failures. For people not in the USA, the RMA process seems to be extremely slow - Fill in support request, go back and forth 3 or 4 times, each taking 24 hours or more. Eventually you get an RMA and send it back (at least they will accept just the main board which reduces postage). Mine has been in transit for over a week with no indication they have received it yet.
What is lacking for me is a UK distributor who might be able to speed up the process. I'm badly missing the beast and having to use an MVP is a step backwards too far!

I received my third replacement unit.
To be fair, the unit has worked flawlessly since I got it. As Mvallevand said, these units are first year production units and I guess it is to be expected that there will be problems with hardware. Of course , I was very disappointed to have to wait for the third unit before I get it right. Other than that, I think that only a modded MBOX is better than the popcorn. Well, nothing can be better than the MBOX anyways. Hopefully this unit will last me longer, but the people from NMT have done a good job with RMA's and such, so no complaints there. |
