Hi,
I am planning a new HTPC focused website for users of all HTPC software and hardware. A community to share knowledge, frustrations and successes. It will be a community site where everyone is welcome to contribute and will be not-for-profit. There will be advertising, but just as a method of covering operational costs.

As a place where everyone is welcome what would be a good name? I have a few ideas already that I'll post and see what you think. Hopefully someone doesn't register them just to try to make a buck but if they do then I'll just pick another name.

What are your thoughts on the following .com potentials. None are yet registered:

htpcunlimited
ultimatehtpc
premiumhtpc
everythinghtpc
exclusivehtpc
htpcinformation
htpcmadesimple

I already have a mockup of the site at a domain name I registered for fun since it was cheap:

http://www.underfunded.info

also what do you think about the design so far? No forums yet but I'll be getting to that part.

Thanks,
Ian.

Good point, site is in an alpha stage and I'm adding to it as I get feed back. Fixed.. Now what about the potential names?

I currently use SageTV, but that is mostly because it was the most appropriate (easiest) choice when I setup my current HTPC almost two years ago. I am getting ready to rebuild the system and am open to each system again and will be starting my research after my wedding and honeymoon a little later this year.

But the major idea of the website is to create a central area where people can easily compare and share tips for each program and keep up to date with the news related to them. I am hoping to build a small team of people to assist, potentially one person per program to keep the site updated with the news for a particular program (or cover a couple programs) as well as community submissions.

OK, if serious about this why just .com? Why not .org?

Actually like this, can't see why we don't pull together....

@turajb thank you for that site, I hadn't seen it before. One comment related to them is that the last front page update is over 3 months old. That isn't exactly a hopping site, same goes for htpcnews.com. The only site that I have seen that has been very active is missing remote and I feel this is a large enough community that it should be able to support a few sites.

@steeb the reason I am trying for a .com is so that it does not seem I am copying an existing .com site. For instance, I love the name htpcnews, but there is the defunct site that exists there and opening the .org version could cause confusion. IANAL (i am not a lawyer) but I want to make sure that with my new site there is not a potential for any lawsuits. If you think .org would be a good possibility then I can easily open that as an option.

I read all these kinds of sites 2.5 years ago for about a month when I built my htpc and chose gbpvr. Maybe I'm less of an enthusiast than some but I've never followed any of those sites since. When I finally buy an HDTV and make the move to an HD capable HTPC, I'll probably follow those sites for another month and end up on whatever the current best hdpvr application's site (probably here Smile). If your users are just passing through then end up on a product specific site such as here, it may be difficult to maintain a "hoppin" site. But I would have told the google guys that yahoo was already enough so shows what I know. :o

I read many sites because I am interested in media extenders and I don't fully understand the market you are seeking. You can't top avsforum for volume of information nor the individual PVR software sites and mailing lists with dedicated info. As an an example I think that going to byopvr.com for GBPVR information is a bad idea. Then there are the pretty releated sites like engadget and gizmodo too. And if you want to be comprehensive there's MCE information too.

Another issue is I don't think you can expect all the PVR users are going to play nicely together. Even when there are common problems as there was recently with the HD-PVR I think people would prefer to post on there home site then say go to avsforum or htpcnews.com
