I currently backup my code by hand as I release new versions. I'd like to switch to a more formal method of source version control.

I've thought of using SourceSafe, but I was wondering what software other developers were using for their personal develpment?

Any suggestions are appreciated....

i used to use source safe, and then moved one project to googlecode (svn based) for collaborative work.

Now I've put my own svn server in at home (visualsvn), that is backed up to my pvr, and to msn livemesh.. and to my external hard drive...

I am in the process of moving my projects to Perforce, although it is too early for me to get a really good feel for how much I like it. Free for a single developer.

Previous to this, I was using IonForge's Evolution. Which, you'll note, I don't turn into a link and don't recommend. While the webpage still exists, the company itself seems to be pretty much dead. The product itself is... good enough... but has some flakey bits that are somewhat unpleasant. That coupled with zero updates and the same amount of support coaxed me away.

I have used a lot of them; CVS, ClearCase, PVCS, VSS and recently SVN. I never had to use Perforce. My overall favorite is Accurev and it is possible to use it for just personal use. I found this post that may be interesting to you if you end up trying it out.

I use it at home and love it. Drag, drop, done. :-)
