I just boarded up the house for hurricane Ike.
I live on the coast between houston and galveston. (Seabrook if you are looking)
my house is 12' above sea level
storm surge is reported at 18'.
house has been here 30 years and has NEVER had water in it.
we will see if that trend continues.

the worst part is that I am leaving tonight, and wont be back until saturday.
that is 3 days of recordings missed. (shutting off power when we leave)
it will probably be more than 3 days because when the last big storm came through here (alicia 1983) power was out for a week after. (cable was out for 3 months)

I get to sit in a hotel in houston for a few days wondering if I will still have a PVR to come home to.

I will have my laptop with me, so if the hotel has internet, I will be using whurlstons netflix plugin to keep me occupied.

I also missed this post. As a longtime hurricane 'survivor' living in the Big Easy, I really feel for you and your fellow Houstonians. The next weeks will be tough if there is very little power and I can only hope that things don't end up as bad as predicted. I can assure you people in my city will respond with all the help we can give you guys.
Best of luck to you all.

I hope you have a house to go home to. The attached pic was posted on msnbc.com this morning. The bridge between Seabrook and Kemah would have been at the photographers back. Sad It looks like Galveston Bay surged right into Seabrook and Clear Lake... There's a plaque on the wall of the Dairy Queen on the right that shows the high water mark of an earlier hurricane. I wonder if they'll have to add a higher one now?

I still don't have power at home and I'm writing this on the backup generator at my office which also doesn't have power yet. Things got pretty scary during the night of the storm but luckily me any my family got out of it with only minor shingle damage on the roof of our house. We have our neighbor living with us now though because they have a six foot gash in their roof with electrical exposed and water damage. It is crazy looking at 3 mile long lines to wait for gas/food. I know that crews are working tirelessly to get power restored to most of Houston though. I'm ready for normalacy.

Funny thing is, you just described Louisville KY. I'm on a generator here as well (had to drive 100 miles to find one). We actually got hurricane force gusts from it. Most of the city was knocked out and our guys were down in LA helping them. We had to recall them. I hear Cincinnati got it worse than we did. Whooda thunk it?

elbryyan, you have my sincere sympathy. While I've been inconvenienced by hurricanes in the past, only Katrina kicked my butt. I lost my mid city business (the building and everything on the first floor) and was going to give in. I fought thru it and moved the business to the burbs with the help of an SBA loan and 3 years later, am still clawing and scratching. It's not easy but what is nowadays.
I've got many friends in the area and most have come out like you......some also in real bad shape. I hope I (and the New Orleans comminity) will give back as much as we were given then. If there is something you think could help you in some way, please send me a private message and I will try to get it done.
It will take a long while to be back to normal but hopefully, it will be all for the better.

Paul

Thanks pcostanza for your concern. Me and mine are actually doing pretty good right now as we have had lots of freinds able to supply us with ice and we have plenty of water as well. Besides missing all the football action this weekend it was not all too bad. Unless you know of somebody who runs a restaurant business who needs to get rid of their used fryer oil I'm doing ok. ???? you say, well I use it to power my diesel truck and my supply is not being refilled right now.
