Hi,
I am building an Optiplex GX280 for a friend. It's a fresh install of Windows XP, all updated and GBPVR prereq's installed. It's a P4 3.4Ghz with 2GB RAM. I'm familiar with the capacitor issues these optiplexes have had, but the tops of all the caps in this machine appear to be dead flat and the symptoms aren't consistent with that problem (I suspect that rules bad caps out, but admittedly, you never know). Berfore putting the 9600 in, while doing all the updates and installations etc along with many restarts, it was running perfectly.

I was at the point where GBPVR was installed and runs, but I was having trouble getting the TV picture working nicely / at all. Not too concerned about that yet - I think that's just a matter of playing with mux's and settings etc.. I know that part of things is often a bit tricky (although I did expect to have fewer problems than I did on my own PC, but, oh well Smile ).

The plan was always to get a better graphics card with the thought that graphics performance wouldn't be a problem after it was installed and software was tweaked, and that it might even make all the above problems magically go away. The idea is that with the better graphics component than the integrated one, it will play movies, TV, photos and music etc without missing a beat. I still think (hope) that is the case, BUT...

I just put a new Gigabyte NX96T512HP (a 9600GT) into it. It now blue screens pretty reliably the first time I boot it up after the AC power has been disconnected for a while. It then restarts and the system says it can't see the SATA hard drive. Usually the next time I boot it up manually it's fine, though it seems to be getting slightly flakier over time eg. MMC console crashed this time when I went to look in the logs.. Nvidia system tray didn't load..

When the blue screen happens it's too fast to see the text, it just restarts immediately .. is there anything I can do about that?. The only thing in the logs is Event ID 14, Source "nv", Text: "Unknown error on" .. and that's it!

I occasionally hear a slight, quiet squeal which I think is the hard drive (it almost sounds like a muffled, shortened, system speaker beep, it's so quick), so it does kinda look like the drive could be the problem, but it definitely wasn't doing any of this bluescreening rubbish before the 9600 went in. I have downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia and updated the BIOS.

I have connected the extra power cable supplied with the card ... is it likely to be a power supply problem? I have another hard drive sitting there which I could try instead, so will try that. I wondered if it would be worth rebuilding Windows with the 9600 installed this time, rather than adding it later .. ?

Appreciate any thoughts offered.

Cheers
Julian.

There is an option somewhere - I was told where to look - that stops the computer automatically restarting after bluescreen so you can get the details.

The first thing I would do is go to somewhere like guru3d and get a driver cleaner and remove all the nvidia drivers and start again with the latest there is on the nvidia webiste. I had a similar issue to yours awhile ago and this cleared it up, probably worthwhile reseating the card while you eliminating factors as well.

I proved that it wasn't the hard drive (installed windows on another hard drive and had the same problem). Followed your advice and removed the drivers completely.

Then, when it found the 9600 again on the next restart, instead of installing the drivers using Nvidia's executable file, I just let the Windows found new hardware wizard look at the CD and install it itself. It seems to be working fine now.

Cheers for your help!

Only trouble with this is that I guess I won't easily be able to upgrade the drivers if I can't use Nvidia's own installer.

you should be able to use nvidias drivers now, something would have happened during the last install that just didn't work so well. maybe try going back one version or wait for a new version to be released before trying the nvidia drivers again

Julian - the GX280 stock PSU is --160-- WATTS!!

Think that is all one needs to know...

Bet it's the ps.

I know it's kind of a proprietary PS but if it has standard connectors see if you can get a hold of a 250+ W job (externally) and give it a go.

Good Luck,
Littlalex

P.S. - remember, as a rule, the better the graphics card the bigger the power demands.

The power supply in this dell is 240/260W - looked at it this morning but can't remember which. I put in a 420W supply this morning (sitting outside the box as I can't put it in and close the case - damn Dells!) and got a "memory could not be written" error after logging in...

Have seen this before but not frequently, so this time I downloaded a diagnostics cd from Dell for this model and after a while determined that memory slot 3 is faulty. I've removed one of the modules (system definitely passes the diagnostics now) and am running on 1GB instead of 2GB, which I think will be fine really - the OS is XP and the 9600 has 512MB of it's own memory.

No errors like the one above since.. system seems ok. It was never hugely problematic once it got going ... just the odd application freeze/error, which I guess is likely to be the m/b issue I found. Up til now I have fixed the system's stability more by mucking about with codecs than anything else!

I think I will put that other hard drive back in and see what happens (it previously bluescreened immediately.)

Might also muck about with the bigger power supply as well, but it's not looking like there's an issue there. Does anyone particularly think 240W is too low for this system?

So here I am on the other hard drive - booted up fine. Reinstalled the nvidia driver and a few others.. no problems. Might be able to get the PC swapped - it was an ex-lease job, hopefully still within its 30 days.

I still think the other HDD is a bit dodgey (makes the odd noise) so I'll bring everything over to this one I'm testing on and keep going from there.

Thanks for reading Smile

Still hoping for input re. the power supply .. cheers.
