I've been running BOINC on my GBPVR server for about 3 years. The BOINC processes don't interfere with any of the other processes as they take a very low priority. It really is something for nothing.

A friend once asked me about "wasting" so much power with the machine running 24x7x52. My reply was that my central heating system is working for science !.
