I've applied all the advice I've found but am still desperate for help.

I have not found a video decoder that will both (1) properly display deinterlaced 1080i OTA signal and (2) display video while in timeshift mode or recorded video. The MainConcept decoder that installed with the HVR-950 tuner will properly deinterlace and display a live 1080i signal, but will not display recorded video or video while in timeshift mode. The HCW decoder that installed with the HVR-950 tuner does the opposite---there's terrible tearing of the 1080i signal, but the signal will display (albient with tearing)during timeshift mode. During all of this, my CPU is at about 45%.

I recently discovered that, even though the 1080i signal suffered from tearing while I recorded it in GB-PVR, if I play it back through my recently-installed PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra, the video is perfect (and the CPU is at a mere 4%!). On the configuration page for PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra, I checked the option to use Avivo hardware decoding and Auto Select deinterlacing.

So I configured GB-PVR to use that the PowerDVD7 decoder, but alas it behaved exactly like the HCW decoder--terrible tearing, but displays the video during timeshift mode. Although GB-PVR allows me to configure the PowerDVD7 decoder, far fewer options are available to configure than are available through the PowerDVD configuration page. Hardware encoding is among the missing options.

After more research, I had high hopes for the solution presented here -- http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=2...stcount=18 -- but even with the suggested registry tweaks, the result is the same. Tearing.

Is there a way to get the PowerDVD7 decoder to behave in GB-PVR as well as it behaves in PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra? Is there a better decoder that I should be using?

BTW, I'm using Catalyst 8.8. And my logs are attached. Thanks so much for the guidance.

What resolution are you running in? I have 720p running perfectly smooth on SD channels (perfect news tickers etc) and HD (UK channels are 1080i I believe) are almost 100% perfect too. I get the odd minor jitter ever now and then but the rest of the time playback is spot on. Oddly I've never got 1080i to work satisfactory, the deinterlacing on SD channels is awful, the news tickers look liney and jerky. Using powerstrip I've managed to get it do 1080p@50 (for UK PAL, 1080p60 is jerky) and it's almost perfect but I get a minor jitter every 5 seconds or so like it's dropping a frame - noticable again on the tickers or football panning shots - which is annoying, if I could get rid of that I'd be very happy. I'm using PDVD7.3 ultra plus a slightly mangled installation of PDVD8 trial (PDVD7 was fine before I started messing around with 8). I found that removing CCC and using powerstrip helped. 8.8 CCC seemed to make a total mess of my deinterlacing but the reg tweats on the AVS forum helped. Now I am using 8.9 without CCC again. Oddly recenly my HD recordings have gone a little weird - they playback for 30 seconds fine and then hang. They restart if you pause/play or fastforward etc - never used to do this and liveTV is still perfect for HD. So dunno if 8.9 or something else has caused this. The recordings play back perfectly in PDVD though so I'm a little confused as to what I've done.

Thanks for the feedback. My screen resolution is 1280 x 1024. I haven't hooked it up to my 1080p plasma yet.

Fortunately 720p works fine. Unfortunately most of my local stations are 1080i and unwatchable.

1080i broadcasts are unwatchable in 720p? My HD channels are all 1080i and are perfectly watchable in 720p but not so much in 1080i resolution.

I didn't realize that GB-PVR would convert 1080i to 720p. Could you tell me how to do that?

Thanks!

The channels are broadcast in some resolution or other - in this case 1080i. GB-PVR plays it back in whatever resolution you have the graphics card set to, so in your case 1280 by 1024? In mine 720p@50Hz - the refresh rate is very important too. You will find that the performance you get varies an awful lot based on the reselution/refresh rate you have the card set to. Your minitor will probably do 720p so give it a go and see if your 1080i broadcasts look OK (get the Hz right also for your broadcast - 1080i25 then use 720p50). It's asking a lot to display HD in bizzare resolutions/refresh rates even 1080p@60 Hz is poor for a PAL (25/50 Hz) broadcast. So I wouldn't be surprised if your resolution/refresh rate is what's causing your problems.

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, I'm surrendering. After weeks of struggling with GB-PVR, I took a trip to the dark side and tried the trial version of BeyondTV.

No more tearing 1080i OTA video, plus CPU use of 12-15%, which leads me to believe that the SnapStream MPEG2 decoder can use hardware decoding on the 780g. (Unfortunately you can't use the SnapStream decoder from within GB-PVR).

It's going to kill me to pay for the full version, but I just don't have the skills to get anything else to work.

Good luck.
