Windows 7 will introduce Direct2D, a sort of accelerated 2D replacement for GDI used for drawing 2D graphics, lines, splines, etc. It runs on top of Direct3D 10 and requires WDDM 1.1 drivers. This has been long awaited, and future applications should see snappier windows performance in standard applications, not just 3D apps.

I am completely out of my element here, but I seem to remember GBPVR is based on GDI.

If so will this impact GBPVR?

Quote:Don't you hate it when a media application uses the video overlay function of your video card in Vista, and there's this annoying screen flash as you lose the Aero glass interface? Then there's another flash as Aero is restored when you shut the program down. With Windows 7 and WDDM 1.1 drivers, that shouldn't happen anymore.

Will this enable overlays with Vista?

I like the 'shouldn't' - there are lot of things that shouldn't happen on a PC, but inevitably do.

I'd like to know how they came up with Windows 7...
By my count, it should be Windows 11 at least.

Don't be surprised if they change the name many more times before release. I think it's a game to the folks at MS.

What about Windows ME? I don't blame anyone for not wanting to remember that one!

The marketing folks at Microsoft are genius and they do whatever works in their versioning. Years ago,in the early days of the PC, when Microsoft Word was at Version 2, WordPerfect spent MILLIONS of dollars advertising their upcoming new version, 6.0. They ran full page ads in all the PC mags touting "6.0" in huge type, while mentioning WordPerfect as the product in a smaller font. About the time they finally released it, a new version of Microsoft Word was released as, you guessed it, Version 6.0. I've always wondered how many people purchased version 6 of Word because they had seen the "Version 6.0" ads for WordPerfect, without realizing the difference. Rolleyes

Up until that point in time WordPerfect was the defacto standard for word processing. I think that Microsoft's "Version 6" marketing strategy probably helped WordPerfect slide into obscurity...

Actually from what I've read Windows 7 is still version 6.xx at the command prompt like Vista.

Wasn't that meant to be a bug fix to 98?

Wasn't W7 originally known as 'Vienna'?
Actually, I'm very much looking forward to it and hope MS asks me to test it's Media Center.
