Anyone tried this yet? Looks like it would do the trick for "archiving" those h.264 HD shows (and it supports LATM for us in NZ). And it has a CLI which should permit automatic transcoding of recordings?

I love Handbrake. It's about the only program that converts my mpegs to something smaller at a very good quality. MCEBuddy does a great job as well but seems to take too long.
I confess I haven't used it much as am still learning more about it.

I've used it to rip my entire DVD collection to GBPVR (standard def.)

The latest betas now rip BluRay discs too, providing you have a drive that can read them...

It's really good for ripping out episodes in DVD season collections. I did all 10 seasons of Stargate into single episodes. Too weeks doing one or two discs at a time, but well worth it for "on demand" episodes when I feel like watching one!

Edit: sorry don't see a beta, however this last build is only 5 days old, maybe what you are looking for is already in there.

yes 0.9.3 was just released. It is of interest to me because it seems to be able to handle the LATM audio used in NZ. So it should be possible to use the product to convert the HD H.264 broadcasts into dvix/xvid for example.

Hasso

Nice. I've tended to use Handbrake for episodic DVDs, but not for single file things since it couldn't accept the file anyway unless it was a DVD/ISO. But now it can.

Trying it right now to see if it can retain 6-channel AC3 audio or convert DTS to AC3 6-channel. In the past, I only got a downmix out of it.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

Does Handbrake support and use multicores? I been playing with Mediacoder the last few days and it certainly makes the most of by Quad Core but quite often fails.

Mind if I ask what format you generally convert files to when trying to compress HD recordings? I have a bunch of stuff I'd rather not delete but it's starting to take up a lot of space so I'm trying to figure out the best thing to transcode them to without losing a lot of quality on the recordings.
