It would be easier to see what plugins that supports new GUI then.

Here's my reply to all about this.

We've all been here for a while. We all have different interests, and we want to be sure that our interests are best served.

Moving forward, here are some very strong directives I want to work with and apply.

The wiki will first and foremost be for new users, inspiring them to install and use GB-PVR. The wiki needs to be less intimidating and forboding.

The wiki must not present too many choices for new users. They should be lead naturally though the basic steps to install a default GB-PVR installation.

The Quick start, the home page and the side bar should all uphold this ideal.

At the point that a new user starts to customize, he is no longer a new user.

Of course there are many people who come over to GB-PVR specifically for a certain plugin. That's why giving users a clear basic unerstanding of a default install will help them when they install that plugin or skin -- But they should always be aware that they are customizing a default installation, and that a default installation is the defacto starting point for troubleshooting...

Another point I would like to have agreed is to keep up with sub's own practise of not supporting (too far into) the past (especially NON PVRX2...)

That means that we should assume, so that a new user may assume, that anything they can 'easily' get their hands on should work. That means burying the really advanced stuff.

A few layers, and as we dig we get get deeper and more technical...

It should be logical of course
  • Introduction
  • Features
  • Default Installation
  • Getting Support
  • Available Plugins and skins (these would be only modern ones) VERY BRIEF
  • [INDENT] - Detailed Plugins and skins page denoting other aspects of the plugins, including a repository for older, unsupported, dead stuff.[/INDENT]

I do not want a new user to be confused with 'this is under development, this might work, try this...' I don't even want a new user to see this while he gets through the first few pages.

An example of this is ZProcess. I will not be discussing ZProcess in the new user pages (the first visible and most accessiable). I will point out (later in the manual, how GB-PVR transcodes on the fly, and then have a link to ZProcess as an optional utility.

We will discuss and screen shot the blue skin for most 'newbie' pages, but have lots of links to alternate skins and references to the Community skin.

An example of a 'of course it should be in the newbie pages' is comskip. It figures strongly in the default configuration. It's also mostly unzip and use...
Another is EWA though it will be considered an alternate GUI

There may be other things that should make it into 'what a newbie sees first and before his eyes glaze over' category. I need input.

As far as plugins go, very few of them will not work. Those that are "broken" have nothing to do with gbpvr.exe or pvrx2.exe. The only thing that PVRX2 interface does for plugins is provide a newer UI method. MusicLibrary2 works just fine on a fresh install for example.

I think the grouping on the plugin's page goes a long way towards steering users (especailly newbies) since they only list "supported" plugins.

What I was thinking of wasn't pvrx2 vs. gbpvr.exe, but more like grouping those categories on the side menu as well. Music, Video, ect.

The major point is that the wiki is to scary for new users as I said before. So imho the basic concept and a how to get a minimal installation working is the primary division.
Next comes the separation of what is designed for pvrx2, what works with pvrx2, and what is outdated. I would really advise to move the no longer supported stuff under an archive header.

Actually, to be brutally ruthless, I would take this a step futher. In the sidebar, under plugins, skins and utilities, maybe there should only be the categories and not the specific items themselves...

eg, stattik's script and ZProcess could go under 'Transcoding', or 'Video File Processing'

The quick start could reference each of the differnet section home pages

That is something close to what I was getting to. That idea actually may be better than what I was thinking.
+ No out of date references on the sidebar.
- Items burried deeper (so what?)

My original thoughts were change this:
Code:
Plugins and more

    * Translations
    * Utilities…
    * Plugins…
          PluginA
          PluginB
          PluginC
    * Skins…
    * Skins (16:9)…
    * Custom tasks…
    * Wallpaper

to this:
Code:
Plugins

    * Music Plugins...
          PluginA
          PluginB
          PluginC
    * Video Plugins...
    * Ect.

Utilities
    * Blah...

OK, so let's open this up.. Fatman_do's idea is not bad, but it still involves a bit of a list, and the sheer size adds glaze to newbies eyes...

I think it should be

Code:
Plugins
    * Music...
    * Video...
    * Misc...
    * Etc.

Utilities
    * Video (Transcoding)...
    * Library (organizer)...
    * Misc...
    * Etc.

Actually I was agreeing with you. The example was before the idea of removing all plugins and skins from the sidebar. To me the "..." indicates a sub-menu but I don't think that is your intention, correct?

Yeah. It means link their respective pages.

Well let's back it up and then try it...
