Hi, I asked a similar question some time ago and it does not seem to be possible with the analogue devices.

you can kinda get that effect depending on your source box...but you'd have a wrong aspect ratio in the file..[it would look like 4:3 but be a16:9 recording..]
my sat box lets me select 4:3 or 16:9 tv, but since it's svideo out, it results in a stretched video w/16:9 setting, which you record like normal...
on playback, you'd have to set aspect w/F7 to correct for recorded aspect...

and since you used more of the screen for video, you get a slightly better video resolution..
but it's a mute point if you don't have any true 16:9 content on your source...
[all non-hd channels on some boxes]

otherwise you'd just get more black bars to avoid...

oh and i think it only works on the rf out [ch3-4]

pBS above is correct. Recordings coming from a analog device are always marked as '4:3' by the H/W encoder, but it will record the widescreen video you supplied it. The 'auto' aspect ratio wont get it right, but you should be able to F7 to correct it.

A usefull tool is "DVD Patcher" http://www.wincesoft.de/html/dvdpatcher.html I record the S Video output using a PVR150 of a Pay TV Set top Box set to 16:9 then use this tool to change the file headers to 16:9 . You can also edit your video with VideoReDo and set the options to 16:9 when you save the new file. I reguarly use this method to make 16:9 DVD compatible video and burn DVD's. The result looks good on my 100cm Sony LCD.

Any other options for recording off an STB? Currently I've only got composite available, but will be moving to a new provider soon where component may be available. Still all SD content though.
