I was wondering before I started...

I just found an ATSC channel in my city. Previously I found a couple of QAM channels from my Cable

My TV has one coax input, but it can handle either an antenna or a Coax cable connection. So it makes me think, is it possible to have Cable and an Antenna on the same coax, feeding the TV...

Later I want to do this with my HVR1600...

Coax cable is typically shielded to prevent local OTA channel interference.

It's not possible to do. Cable and OTA share a lot of the same frequencies. Satellite is easier to combine/separate with OTA or cable because the frequencies used are in a completely different range.

So I guess if I want both, I'll need two or more cards...

Well since my QAM leaves much to be desired, I'll be happy with OTA

Hello,

I'm new here so please bear with me if I have overlooked any formalities or whatnot.

Unless I am missing something.

Not on the same coax feed. But you can have both. Only one at a time. You could use a switch selector with two inputs and one output. One input would be cable etc. the other would be antenna. with one output to the tv or to the card. Slide the switch and tune your tv.

They are cheap about the price of a splitter, and look just like one as well. and easy. I do it with my Hauppauge 1600 and for my TV.. As long as you have the ATSC and the QAM tuners you can have both.

Yup, A switch would work. You just need to remember if you are recording cable or OTA that night. Wink

That makes sense. I know for me though, the reason why a switch wouldn't be my solution, is it wouldn't be auto-switching which would cause trouble with automatic scheduled recordings.

For the moment it's OK, as it seems my cable company can't make up its mind what channels to show in QAM ( or if any). So I will set up ready to catch the new ATSC channels as they come into my area.

I caught a few shows in HD and they are awesome...

Would a splitter work in reverse as a "combiner"? Is there a combiner?

You could try it with the cable and antenna connected on the "outputs" and the 1600 connected to the input. Then I think you could set up two digital capture sources, one with the tuner set to "cable" and one set to "antenna" (assuming QAM/ATSC work similar to analog cable/analog OTA.) Configure the correct channels in the EPG lineups for each source, and GBPVR will know which capture source to use for each channel. Then again, if your channels aren't "stable", this might not work very well.

There is such a thing as a 'combiner', usually it's used to combine cabletv or an antenna with a satellite feed (which is then split on the other end). There are also some that are meant to combine the outputs of two antennas into one cable. They may all work the same, and may essentially be backwards splitters, I'm not sure.

The ultimate problem is though that the signals on the cable and on the antenna are going to be at the same frequencies, and the cable signal will be much stronger than anything from the antenna. Particularly if the cable is still carrying analog, those tend to be sent at the same traditional frequencies as their OTA counterparts. If the cable isn't carrying analog, the cable company will probably have re-used those frequencies for QAM. Either way, it would seem improbable to make it work.

Well that's OK...

On a side note, anyone see this...?
