feature request : Record and Shutdown

A new recording mode

Preamble:

A user wishes to record a program late at night (they will be asleep when recording happening)
They would like the recording to finish and after the recording has finished they want the
PC to shutdown to save electricity and the planet ....

Potential issues:
What if a user uses postprocessing.bat to do some handling after the recording?

1. If gbpvr knows when ever a postprocessing.bat has fininshed it can wait until then
then initiate a computer shutdown.

If 1 not possible

2. A timewait variable controlled through config.xml eg <shutdowndelay>3</shutdowndelay>
this would trigger a shutdown 3 minutes after the recording has finished.

Any chance of implementing this ?

Have you looked into Windows power management, it's a popular choice here.

I've added a "utilities" submenu to my gbpvr interface that lists (amongst other stuff) a range of shutdown options:

shutdown 30
shutdown 60
shutdown 90
shutdown 120
etc

Each one calls a simple .net exe I wrote that takes an argument in minutes and then sleeps until that amount of time has passed before shutting the PC down (completely, not hibernation/sleep).

So if we have a late night recording, we look at the guide, work out how many minutes/hours until it'll all be done, then run one of the above.

It's far from eloquent, but it works well enough.

I'm still not sure why you would need this, Windows Power management works well for this as McBainUK mentioned.

You can tell it to sleep when there x amount of minutes with no activity, so if you have a postprocess running the computer will not do anythng till it is done if you set ie a 1 minute no activity then sleep, i guess if you are specifically looking for shutdown then perhaps you might need to go your way, but i would look into S3 sleep instead, but i think win power management does have and option for shutdown, unfortunately my work computer does not so i can not verify

Could you guys help me out with this then ?

Iam using XP , there is no shutdown option in the power options

There is Standby , if you will notice my org post I said Shutdown.

To imilne:

Good idea , it was one I considered myself , BUT what you are away from your PC and you want to use the remote web interface to schedule a recording , it will record but still not shutdown.

Hence I plead to Sub: Can you add this functionality ?

Obviously the ewa will need to be updated to handle this as well.

You don't really want shutdown - only standby - what if you have a recording at midnight and then one at 4 am. If you do a full shutdown then the 4 am record wont happen.

That said, if you really want a full shutdown - as the last line in your post process .bat check what time it is and if its late at night you could have it force a shutdown there. Alternatively you could try the hibernator it may have a shutdown option as well.

Just set the system to go to standby after 10 mins(or whatever you want) in windows energy settings. Try it out, if it works you have what you want.
On some systems for some reason this doesn't work right, so try it out first.

Hans

Edit: I forgot, you can put it to hibernate too. Do some thorough testing though, waking up from standby or hibernation can cause tunercards not to function properly etc etc.

carpeVideo:
You are totally missing the point , but I will humor you

1. You set a normal recording for the midnight show
2. You set a record and shutdown mode recording for 4am show.
3. You go to bed

I want this as an additional recording mode , not to replace the normal one.

Current set-up recording modes are:
Record once
Record Season (all eps this channel )
Record Season (all in this weekly timeslot this channel)
Record Season (all in this daily timeslot this channel)

I would like this mode to slip below Record Once
Record once (shutdown after)

HtV:
standby or hibernation is problematic for tuner hardware even as you stated , hence thats why I ask for shutdown.

Any thoughts Sub ?

I went away on holiday and returned to find that GBPVR had successfully recorded three weeks worth of series and manual recordings and that the computer had successfully hibernated between each recording.

I too can't see any need for a shutdown. That is a killer for me, nothing could wake it up (other than a restore from powerfail for mine).

I have mine setup to go into hibernate (same miniscule power consumption as shutdown) after 5 minutes of no activity between 23:00 and 17:00, 2 hours during 17:00 and 23:00.

PCH and client PC that are use wake the server up if it's gone to sleep.

With current drivers I don't suffer with driver/tuner problems with hibernate.

Just playing safe, I email the driver status to myself when it wakes from hibernate "just in case".
