Record on Signal / Sync

I have determined that my provider periodically sends out the pay per view channels in the clear, but does not appear to do it according to any predictable pattern.

Is there a way that a feature could be implemented where you tell it to record a show on a channel (like a movie on the ppv channel) and if there is a sync on this channel, it proceeds, and if not it automatically tries to record the next available show that doesn't conflict with other scheduled recordings?

I used to get channels like this, but they are encrypted now. In my cableco's design it would be a bad idea, because the data would pause ff/rw and stop based on what they buyer was doing. The range of content one pid was all extremes of ppv too, so you would need to pre-screen anything.
