download: My Pictures 2.0.1.0

My Pictures now uses a database to store the thumbnail images, so if it finds an image without a stored thumbnail it adds it to the database, once the thumbnails are in the database the thumbnail loading speeds are greatly increased.  Ive also added a "scan" option in the config app, so you can scan the virtual root for all image files and it will create thumbnails that way, which i recommend.  for small images you wont see much of a difference, but for large images, a couple of megs or so, you'll notice a big difference.

if you're not using C:\program files\devnz\gbpvr as your gbpvr directory, you need to change the connection string in the config (just change that value, ignore the rest).

find any bugs, have any requests let me know.

databases are wonderful things...

works all very good and without any errors for me. And the speed improvement, especially while changing folders is quite impressive. Nice work...

I can't wait to go home and try it along with the other new My series plugins!

Great work Reven! I'm definitely a fan of your plugins! Great work.

there was a major oversight with the database and the thumbnails, i didn't allow the possibility of a image to be changed and the thumbnail updated, ie i only tested if the filename was in the database, not if the file version was in the database. so ive added "LastWriteTimeUtc" to the database, which tests if the file exists and that the last time the file was written to matches the thumbnail in the database, this however does not remove the older thumbnail it just adds a new thumbnail with a different "LastWriteTimeUtc" value to the database. The reason why the old thumbnail isnt removed is in case people are using digital camera memory cards, and i'm pretty sure they reuse the same file names, so if have multiple memory cards all with the same name, you dont want to keep adding the thumbnails to the database (and also, im lazy [Image: tounge.gif]).

Ok so this change means you have to delete the old database, and replace it with the new one supplied in the zip (same download as in first post) and enter the configuration app and rescan your thumbs (or just add them as you browse, but its quicker just to do a complete scan). nothing else has been changed, just the new column in the database.

enjoy.

Nice thingy. It works very well for me in general. However, when I set the resolution of my FX-5200's TV out to PAL (720x576) the aspect ratio of the pictures gets slightly screwed up. They look nice with a resolution of e.g. 800x600. Any chance to fix this?

this happens throughout the entire gbpvr program, its not unique to my pictures, thus fixing it here is pointless, i suggest try using a skin that is 720x576 in resolution to fix this problem.

Reven,

I have noticed that when I use either the random feature or the slide-show feature for 5-10 minutes that when I stop the photos slide-show feature I get a windows warning that the system is dangerously low on virtual memory. Has any one else experienced this? Is there something I need to change on my end? I love these features I hope to continue using them. I currently have 512 megs of ram although I really don't think the problem is a lack of memory. Could there be a memory leak somewhere within GBPVR or your plug-in?

Thanks again for your great plug-ins!

pictures can use up a lot of memory, they are really annoying this way, im still a student we havent even touched the surface of images in this way, so my experience is low, and i had to do the best i could. that said, i do dispose of the images once they are no longer being viewed (keep 3 images in memory at all times, previous, current and next). also i was aware of this annoying memory bug when i was programming this plugin (i havent really been working on this plugin for a while now, its still use the older core etc), but when i was working on it i left the slideshow running whilst i slept, so a good 8 hours or so and i had no memory issues, so i thought it was ok.

that said try changing your initial and max virtual memory size to 1000 (if you have the room) so the virtual memory wont be dynamic and windows wont be able to change the size, but its large enough so it wont need it. some will say, just double the values eg inital = 768 max = 1024 (or around there). but ive found that if windows cant change it, it works a lot better.

reven,
Just a quick update. I haven't had a chance to make the changes to the page file allocation yet. With that in mind here is what I experienced the other night which makes me think it won't help much. So I was using the random feature again the other night and after less than 10 minutes it stopped and popped up the error message that the system is dangerously low on virtual memory. So at that point I tried to stop it and the system locked up. After going to the garage and checking things out I noticed that the page file was up to 1.6 gigs. Typically I think it is under 350 megs. So something definitely weird is going on when the My Pictures is running. I'm surprised no one else has experienced it; However... I do have approximately a thousand photos or so in the virtual root directory. Each photo is approximately 3 megs. Do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting what is going on from my end?
I guess I could try making a test folders with fewer photos and see if that helps keep things under control?
