Vista restarting itself automatically to install updates has been driving me crazy, just lost some work because of it (again). I've been googling for a solution but can't find anything so I thought I'd ask here.

The solutions I have seen:

Disable automatic updates and take control of installing updates myself - not satisfactory, I wan't automatic updates, I just don't want automatic restarts.

I've also seen a solution using the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), but this isn't included in Vista Home Premium, which is what I have.

Any ideas?

It may be that if an update requires a restart then it requires a restart to complete the update. It may be that an update that requires a restart may not be a whole update without the restart. Do we get half an update without the restart and will that leave stuff unstable.

Note to self --- I must stop trying to post in the middle of the night when i'm tired and can't string words into sensible sentences.

That's fine, in that case it could just not finish installing the update until the next restart.
I'd be happy for it to prompt me for a restart, but doing it automatically is completely unacceptable.

XP had automatic updates without doing this auto restart rubbish.

On the XP here it does auto restarts. I share your pain cos my motherboard is semi-shagged and it can take a dozen or more attempts to get it to re-boot. I'll stop now cos I ain't helping.

I don't totally disable updates, I just set all of my systems to notify me when updates are available. That way I get to decide when to download and install them. (Well, except for the ones that Microsoft sneaks in the back door anyway, disregarding the "notify" option).
