i am already in the dog house, what do folks recommend as a CHEAP power supply ... 400-500W?

To support an AMD gigabyte motherboard and a couple of hard disks.

thanks for any advice.

it's less about the brand and more about the specific power supply you get..
if you can get an 80PLUS certified,do...excellent quality and efficiency..[tho $$]
look for 120mm fans for less noise and more reliability[harder to clog], and don't get too much more than your system needs..
typical pc's with multiple hard drives only use less than 200 watts normally, even at peak...so anything over 400 without a video card requiring a power connector is overkill... almost everything in a modern pc is low power usage thesedays...cpu,hd,video..
[ever notice Dell's ,etc only come with <350w ps?]

on the cheap side i like FSP Group[Fortron] and Antec are quality...
i do know some rather cheap fanless ones from SilenX [400w] http://www.directron.com/lx4000.html
Smile

btw, i'm running 4 hd, 3 cap cards, a vfd display, and a dual core off a 300w fanless right now...Big Grin

Not quite as cheap (and harder to find) but I have the XG Magnum 500W. It has a backup fan in it that only powers on should the unit overheat but mine has never kicked on.

System specs running on that PSU:
2 - 120GB drives
3 - 750GB drives
2 - 1TB drives
AMD 790FX MB
ATI 4670 video (also ran a 5770 but moved it to another machine).
HVR-2250
Vistaview Saber

Runs at 39C under a 141W load.
