In 2008 the original version of mvpmcx2 (PCH mode) came out that provided the GBPVR UI on the NMT with playback using the native NMT media players. The next evolution (PCH2 mode) came when Syabas provided the necessary information allowing me (with sub's help of course) to support most of the GBPVR functionality on the NMT, first with component and then with HDMI support. In retrospect I feel most users weren't willing to compromise functionality or HDMI support, but I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Although I don't have a MediaMVP-HD, it appears based on a developer's page on their web site, that Hauppauge will openly provide what I need to provide some form of the original PCH mode on their device, but they appear reluctant to provide the detailed information need to go beyond this. I have some concerns because of the unknown player quality. The original NMT player has an annoying 10 second delay but it a robust.

PCH mode has lot of sacrifices (no resume, comskip, OSD) but I preferred the GBPVR interface to NMT's, and based on what I've seen, any interface is better than Hauppauge's.

Veterans and newbies what are your thoughts?

I'd like to see support for the MediaMVP-HD, but I definitely have a biased opinion Big Grin

The MediaMVP-HD project was languishing for a quite a while, but Hauppauge now have a really capable guy on board, hired to push that project forward. He seems to have made good progress, and will definitely be help the quality of the device in the future.

A year ago I would have strongly supported the Hauppauge option. Having observed how they brought this product to the market, I would say too little too late. Also their support for Martin does not seem to be driven with a lot of enthusiasm. I will likely settle for Egreat or refurb some time.

Sorry for Hauppauge, but I don't see any advantage of this device compared to the first generation of NMT's. So I'd say "no, thanks".

The old MVP was a superlative product at the time and is probably why I am here.
I'm afraid it looks like Hauppauge have left it too late. there are no prices over here yet - that could sway me if it was cheap.
I can see no reason to buy one in preference to what else sub+martin support.

This could change of course if it becomes tightly integrated into the core of gbpvr.

As long as I can get something that vaguely looks and acts live the GBPVR server in the lounge (for menus etc - playback I'm happy to be different) then I'm happy with anything. It's all about common interface for me, and PCH mode (and PCH2) has done that in spades.

So I might look at a hauppague Media MVPHD if they support our freeview and I can get GBPVR on it...I'll be in the market for a bedroom replacement soon so I can drop DVB-S entirely. But currently well served with the old A100.

Its not that I'm saying 'Hauppauge over NMT' or anything like that. I just think it'd be great if mvpmcx2 also worked with the Hauppauge device. They're very similar hardware. It just gives people another option.

There is a couple of minor advantages over the first gen NMTs though. (1) it supports HE-AAC, which is the audio format used in New Zealand and a growing list of other countries, and (2) its likely to be easier to buy than the NMTs, and will most likely be available in actual stores (like BestBuy in the US etc).

A disadvantage is the native UI of the MediaMVP-HD is really crappy. Definitely worse than the NMT devices.

One big advantage to the Hauppauge device that I can see is it is "likely" to be available longer than the NMT's as they have already been superseded by later non compatible models, I am more than happy with my NMT's but concerned what I am going to do in the future when they start to fail.

Martin, from that video link you posted the other day it looks like that bloody annoying delay that the NMT has when using the native play function isn't there with the MVP-HD so PCH mode could work better than it did for the NMT (that is until sub could "find" the information needed to get full functionality working Wink )

Actually the newer 200 series PCH's are already more compatible with PCH2 mode than the MVP-HD will be, and the are the same generation of Sigma tech. Syabas have been good with their support, I think they see real value in keeping GBPVR support if possible.

As for the delay, 10 seconds is annoying, but part of that is unavoidable and the comprehensive mono player might be more powerful then the players Hauppauge provide.

I echo the first part of this response, I want the common interface, reliability and responsiveness....but I don't really care what box is on the shelf doing it.
