tool to combine movie files

I want to combine some movies that come in two DVD's like the Lord of the Rings extended edition. I can rip the seperate disks into two different files but now I want to combine them into one movie file. Anybody know of a good tool to use for this? Thanks.

I think I've done this before with Nero Vision or Nero Recode. But Nero isn't free (free trial though).

Depends on what types of files they are at the moment. if they are VOB's ( from http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/showthread.php?t=5732 )

a) Open a cmd window using the Windows run command.
b) cd to the folder containing your VOB files.
c) At the command line, enter a command similar to:
copy /b vob1.vob + vob2.vob + vob3.vob outputFile.mpg
I think it works for MPG2 files as well.

I'm trying the trial of Nero Vision now, every other tool that I have tried to combine the files has resulted in the second half of the movie being several seconds out of sync with audio with the first part being fine.

Join VOB. Just used it yesterday, worked perfectly, and is free.

Depends on what types of files they are at the moment.

I used handbrake to encode the two discs that contain the movies into part1.m4v and part2.m4v. So far I've joined them but only the part1 video will display even thought the file size grew to match both.
I've joined them but the audio in part2 keeps being 4-6 seconds out of sync even thoughg the original is fine.
