Hi

I was browsing the Sagetv forums, as you do, and came across sub's youtube video demo'ing a A100 with NPVR.

link

Sub was this video sped up in anyway, or does any other NMT user who spots this thread get a similar browsing speed? I ask as my setup is nowhere near this responsive.

If this is 'normal' then I'm definitely going to have to upgrade my server hardware

cheers

That's about the same speed as mine goes & my server is just an old Athlon64 3200 running XP sp2 with an IDE system drive & a number of SATA media drives so unless you server is really really old....... I have found network issues do have a HUGE affect on the NMT's responsiveness though.

Thanks Jaggy..

My server is only about 5 years of age. So I'll do some digging, starting with the network, but given it can stream a 1080p video with no problem I don't think that's the problem. Possibly a dumb question\statement; I'm using the server motherboard's onboard intel graphics card piece of junk, so if this is about screen composition, navigation, etc then possibly that's my bottleneck? Or it's the WHS operating system? or... Smile

anyway it's good to have a benchmark to aim for now.

There is no smoke and mirrors. It wasnt speed up. I just plugged the output of the A100 into the component video input of my Hauppauge Colossus and browsed around for a bit while I recorded it. I do have a fairly decent CPU in my server though, which can certainly help on the time to generate screens etc.

My experience would have to be the same as Jaggy's.

My used daily PCH A110 gives about the same response as sub's vid does, with as sub said "no smoke and mirrors".

The server driving it is a Pentium 2.4Ghz dual core, I have 1 Gb of RAM on board it...

My Sister-in-Law who pays a heavy price for a SKY STB setup has even remarked how much more responsive my TV set up is Big Grin

My network is 'hard-wired' but not truly as not CAT cables running over the house, all running 'Network over Powerline adaptors' (by Devolo)

cheers

I have found in the past that I could play videos fine but navigation was slow when I had a damaged network cable....just a comment. If you can try hooking up the network direct from the server to your NMT & see if it makes a difference. One other thing I had forgotten about was when I had a media HDD that was dying it also slowed down a lot of the navigation, but it was also slow navigating around on the computer when I finally got around to trying to figure out what was going on.

The servers graphics doesn't affect the NMT operation at all.... your server could have no graphics capabilities at all & the NMT would still work fine. I can't comment on WHS but I know others are using it with NMT's

I definitely don't see responses as fast as sub's either but they are close, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tXiOhDCFXs (and my remote is lagging because I was reacting to captured video).

For me the biggest factors would be server speeds, disk speed (retrieval of meta data) and resolution. NPVR HD on the PCH defaults to 1280x720 which is higher than most extenders and you could probably reduce that by 10-15% for a noticeable speed improvement.
